  • Reconstruction of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation during the last 8000 years by the analysis of Beppu Bay sediment cores

    We analyzed paleotemperature and fish scale abundance in sediments from two 20 m-long cores retrived from Beppu Bay, Kushu, Japan and generated a four-year resolution records of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and regime shifts during the last 8000 years.   • Reconstruction of Holocene environmental changes based on magnetic properties of lacustrine and inner-bay sediments

    Intending to contribute high-resolution chronology and environment study, we investigated magnetic properties of the Holocene lacustrine and inner-bay sediments, including remanent magnetization, variation of magnetic concentration, coercivity distribution and thermomagnetic properties. Although the sediments from brackish-water basins, Lake Ogawara and Lake Abashiri, had suffered loss of magnetic minerals possibly due to reductive diagenesis, high-coercivity magnetic minerals, hematite and goethite, were enhanced in the topmost sediment from the Haneji Inner-Bay and the Shioya Bay on Okinawa Island, suggesting significant runoff of red soils from the watershed. On the other hand, sediments from Ichi-no-megata, Beppu Bay and a fresh-water interval of Lake kushu are characterized by stable remanent magnetization.   • High-resolution environmental reconstruction for the Pacific civilizations using annually laminated lake sediments

    The purpose of the study is to clarify the relationship between environmental changes and the ancient civilizations in the Pacific regions. Sediment cores were recovered from the lakes in Guatemala, Southern Peru, Cambodia and Ryukyu Islands. These were analyzed to reconstruct the past environmental changes, i.e., climate, natural disasters, vegetation and anthropogenic activities over the regions. Radiocarbon (C-14) determinations obtained from annually laminated sediments in Lake Suigetsu were incorporated in the C-14 calibration curve, Intcal 13, which contributes to the high-precision dating in archaeology and geosciences.   • Basic Studies of the Paleo-environmental Changes and Paleolithic Chronology in Northeast Asia

    Using loess-paleosol sequence synchronized with Marine Isotope Stages as a global standaerd, the stone assemblages from the multi cultural layers in the Mansuri site were reevaluated. We made reexamination about the real age for the controversial Houjiayao Paleolithic site in North China as well as the techno-typological analysis for the industry from the site.   • High resolution multiple time scale analysis of Lake Biwa sediments-Research on climate and tectonics during past 150,000 years

    Six piston core samples and two drilling samples from Lake Biwa were obtained in 2007 and 2008. Those core sediments have a potential which is clarified the precise environmental change during past 300,000 years on the basis of tephrochronologial data and 14C dating.
