Profile

Professor of Systematic Theology, School of Theology, Doshisha University. Dean of the School of Theology, Director of the Center for Study of Conscience. His field is Christian theology, religious ethics and comparative study of monotheistic religions. He studied in Mainz and Heidelberg, Germany and earned a Th.D. from Doshisha Graduate School of Theology. He has been interested in the relationship between the Abrahamic religions and Japanese/Asian religions, focusing on contemporary issues such as religious conflicts, freedom of religion and dialogue between religion and science. He is the author of Politics of Religion: The Encounter of the Japanese Society and the Monotheistic World (2010), The Dramaturgy of God: Focusing on Nature, Religion, History, and Body as the Stage (2002), "Creation and Apocalyptic Crises in Japan: A Theological Lesson Learned from the Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Fukushima" (Ernst M. Conradie ed., Creation and Salvation, Volume 2: A Companion on Recent Theological Movements, Berlin: LIT Verlag, 2012), etc.

• Development of Religious Ethics in the Age of Science: Building of the "Ethics of the Absent"

  本研究は、科学技術が人間の欲望を先導する時代において、宗教倫理の視点から、現代世代の倫理的責任を明確化し、世代を超えた新たな公共性の認識を拓くことを目的としている。このような課題を担う「不在者の倫理」構築するために、2018年度は、その構成要素の中から、特にエネルギー問題、人工物と人間の関係を整理した。 エネルギー問題は、現在世代の消費行動や政策決定が未来世代や未来の地球環境に決定的な影響を与えることを示しているが、現実には、未来世代の資産を現在世代が先食いしているかのような状況がある。こうした問題を考え、現代世代中心主義を抑制するためには、より広い歴史感覚に支えられたコミュニティ意識（世代間コミュニティ）が必要となる。そのために、今ある存在が「不在のもの」によって構成されていることを科学の視点からも認識し、「過去の不在者」との相互関係を「未来の不在者」への責任へと転換する「不在者の倫理」を、科学と宗教を架橋する倫理として構築していかなければならない。 今後、人工知能やロボットなどの人工物が、人間の経済活動やエネルギー消費を最適化することが予想されるが、他方、人間の価値判断がスマホ、人工知能等の人工物から多大な影響を受けていることも認識しなければならない。その意味では、人間と人工物（技術）の根源的な相互浸透性を視野に入れることのできる価値規範が求められる。人工知能のような人工物は「不在者」の世界から「存在者」の世界へと越境してくる可能性を持つ。しかし、「不在者」の「存在者」の世界への越境行為は決して新しいことではなく、むしろ、両者のコミュニケーション作法に関して、我々は膨大な宗教的・文化的蓄積を有している。そうした知見を生かして、近未来社会にふさわしい、人間と人工物を架橋する倫理的規範を考えていく必要があるだろう。, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), 2017/04 -2023/03, Principal investigator, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Doshisha University
• Synthesis of the Global Ideological and Empirical Studies on Conscience

  The goals of this research are to examine "conscience" in contemporary society and establish the "study of conscience" as an interdisciplinary academic field through the exploration of its possibilities for application and practice. Contemporary society is riddled with a variety of problems. If it is true that such a thing as a common conscience exists and that it functions as a moral compass informing us of our most basic needs as a species, would it not be reasonable to suppose that disregarding this conscience would lead to personal and interpersonal conflict? The heritage of Doshisha University is imbued by a constructive spirit which acknowledges the importance of the human conscience. This research aims to build on this tradition by establishing a new broad-based academic discipline of "Conscience Studies" which is capable of providing scientific verification. In order to ascertain the applied potential of "Conscience Studies," this research will modernize classical understandings/interpretations of human conscience and then develop and apply new theories to actual cases of local and global conflicts. In this academic year, we have published a book "Introduction to the Study of Conscience" (Iwanami Shoten, July 2018) through which we could disseminate our research activities to the public widely. • An ethical foundation for the environmental culture and the energy policy after the Fukushima disaster

  In modern nations, it has been assumed that publicness brings maximum benefits to “humans” of the “current generation” with science and technology regarded as a tool to this end. If we are to criticize such a modern framework and present an alternative ethical standard that is not too human-centric or current-generation-centric, we need to be able to engage in dialogue with the dead and embrace a sense of responsibility toward future generations. • A Study of the Just War Theory in the Multi-religious Society: From the Viewpoint of the Comparative Religious Ethics

  今年度は、正戦論がキリスト教とイスラームにおいて機能する場合の同質な要素と異質な要素に注目しながら、正戦論が現代において果たす意義について考察をした。ユダヤ教・キリスト教・イスラームといった一神教が、どのような理由(状況)で暴力(戦争)に接近するのかを考えると、正戦論のアナロジーとして聖戦(宗教的な動機付けを伴った戦い)の解釈が重要になる。これらの一神教の伝統には、終末論的な世界観や歴史観が共通要素として存在しているが、それは過去の思考方法にとどまらず、現代の紛争やテロのある局面においても、重要な役割を果たしていることがわかった。また、紛争の背景理解のために、単に直接的な暴力のあり方を観察するだけでなく、そうした暴力を生み出す構造的な暴力の所在についても探求を進めた。一神教に共通の伝統として偶像崇拝の禁止があるが、特にイスラームの場合は、バーミヤンの仏像破壊の例を引くまでもなく、この禁止規定に対する関心が高い。現代においては、偶像は物質的な対象物に限定されるべきではなく、むしろ、偶像を構造的暴力(たとえば経済格差や文化的差別)を正当化あるいは神聖化する象徴的力として理解した方が、暴力の起点を探りやすくなると思われる。このことは9.11テロ事件においても明瞭に認められる。 研究成果の一端を今年度は次のような形で成果発表した。「一神教と多神教の二分法に対する批判的考察」(日本宗教学会 第62回学術大会)、「セム系一神教の終末論に関する比較宗教学的考察」(日本基督教学会 第51回学術大会)、"The Confrontation of Monotheistic and Polytheistic View of Nature in Japan" (American Academy of Religion,2003 Annual Meetings)、"Conflicts of Pacifism and Just War Theory from the Japanese and Christian Viewpoint" (CISMOR International Workshop)、「戦争論に対する神学的考察」(日本基督教学会 近畿支部会)。, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), 2002 -2003, Principal investigator, Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), Doshisha University

• Religion and "Cults" in Question Vol.4 Religious Freedom and Regulations (Part 1), Media report, NHK, The Mind Age: Religion and Life, 02 Apr. 2023, The series "Religions and "Cults" in Question" (broadcast in October and December) has been a great success. In this sequel, we will focus on the issue of legal restrictions on religious groups and the "freedom of religion" guaranteed by the Constitution. Last December, a new law was passed to prohibit unjustified donations in order to help victims of the former Unification Church. How should we consider the relationship between legal restrictions on religious organizations and the "freedom of religion" guaranteed by the Constitution? In this fourth installment of the series, Ayano Kanazuka, a lawyer, Keigo Komamura, a constitutional scholar, and Yuko Tanaka, a sociologist, join the discussion. They will be joined by Yoshihide Sakurai, a religious scholar familiar with the former Unification Church, Susumu Shimazono, a religious scholar, and Katsuhiro Obara, a pastor and religious scholar.

• The Current Situation of the U.S.A. as a Religious Country, Paper, Myself, Kyoto Newspaper, Evening Edition, 20 Aug. 2010, アメリカでの一年間の滞在（在外研究）を終えて帰国した。住んでいた場所が、カリフォルニア州の中でも特に気候に恵まれた場所であったため、猛暑の日本に降り立ったときには、急速に汗ばむ現実に引き戻され、一年の生活がまるで夢でも見ていたかのように思えた。 気候に限らず、アメリカと日本との間には様々な違いがある。アメリカは世界総人口の４パーセントを占めるに過ぎないが、世界の総エネルギーの４０パーセントを消費している。どん欲なほどの消費を支える高い生産性と創造性の源泉は、アメリカ社会の多様性にあると、しばしば指摘されてきた。様々な背景や価値観を持つ人々がアメリカにやって来ることにより、高いレベルの競争力と創造性が維持されているというのだ。 しかし、異なる価値観は競争的エネルギーにもなるが、時に、それは大きな葛藤と対決を生み出す。アメリカの場合、価値観の源泉の一つに宗教的伝統がある。アメリカの中で、日本からもっとも見えにくい一面は、その宗教的側面だろう。先進資本主義国家の中で、アメリカは異常なほど宗教性が高い。具体的に言うと、世俗化が進んでいるヨーロッパ諸国では、教会の礼拝出席率が平均すると５パーセント程度なのに対し、アメリカでは４割近くを長年維持してきている。 また、今日のアメリカの宗教性を理解する上で欠かせないのが、その多様性である。アメリカは建国以来、プロテスタントの国としての自己理解を持ってきた。それゆえ、カトリックやユダヤ教を背景とする移民が増加していく中で、当初、それらの人々をプロテスタントでないために二級市民扱いしていたが、２０世紀になってからは、徐々にカトリックやユダヤ教も「アメリカの宗教」として受け入れていった。戦後は、仏教をはじめとするアジアの宗教もアメリカ社会に根付いていった。葛藤をはらみながらも、宗教的寛容を社会の基本原理に据えようとしてきた歴史が、そこにはある。 しかし、９・１１同時多発テロ事件は、アメリカの寛容度を一気に引き下げることになった。イスラームに対する警戒心や誤解は、かつてなかったほどに高まったと言えるだろう。目下、９・１１テロの現場、かつて世界貿易センターが存在していたグラウンド・ゼロと呼ばれる場所のすぐ近くにモスク建設が予定されている。この計画をめぐって、大物政治家を巻き込んだ大きな論争が起こり、今もそれは続いている。モスク建設をめぐって、アメリカの寛容を示すことこそがテロリストに対する抗議になり得るという容認派と、イスラームへの反感を隠さない反対派がぶつかり合っている。 宗教は確かに一筋縄にはいかない。しかし、それをできる限り客観的に見ることができれば、人間心理の不思議な深層を垣間見られるだけでなく、この世界が特定の価値観によって統合されたり、引き裂かれたりする現実を、より幅広く視野に収めることができるはずだ。こうした話題に関心ある方には、近刊拙著『宗教のポリティクス─日本社会と一神教世界の邂逅』（晃洋書房）をご覧いただきたい。
• The Past and the Present of Reading: Impacts of Electronic Books, Paper, Kyoto Newspaper, Evening Edition, 01 Jun. 2010, 学生時代、ドイツのマインツという街に数年住んでいたことがある。ライン川に面したその街はワインの名所として知られているが、グーテンベルクが最初の活版印刷技術を発明した場所でもある。来客があるたびに、グーテンベルク博物館に案内し、最初に印刷された４２行聖書の解説をしたものだ。それらは、１５世紀に印刷されたものとは思えないほどの色鮮やかさを残していた。 それ以前、文書を代々伝えていく手段は、人の手による写本であった。大量に作ることができないため、本はごく一部の特権階級の人しか手にすることができなかった。しかし、活版印刷技術の発明により、本の大量生産が可能になり、ドイツ語の標準化を含め、文化や学問の全体に大きな影響を及ぼすことになった。グーテンベルク革命と呼ばれるゆえんである。 今、アメリカに住んでいる私は、第二の出版革命とも言われる電子書籍ブームを身近に経験している。そのブームはまだ英語圏に限定されているかもしれないが、紙の印刷物が遅かれ早かれ電子書籍に移行していくことを予感させるのに十分なほどの勢いを感じる。電子書籍そのものは何年も前から存在していた。しかし、電子書籍の数や、それを読むための機器が実用的な段階にまで成熟し、一気に電子書籍を取り巻くマーケットを賑わすことになった。この流れは新聞や雑誌などのメディアにも大きな影響を与えようとしている。 本や新聞が印刷物としてではなく、電子画面上でもっぱら読まれるようになると一体何が変わるのだろうか。すぐに思いつくことの一つは、森林資源の節約ということだろう。かつて、パソコンが普及すれば画面上で確認できるので、紙の消費量が減るだろうと言われた。実際には減るどころか、大幅な増加となっている。 紙が簡単にはなくならない一つの原因は、長い文章をパソコンの画面で読むことが難しいからである。森林資源の節約に逆行するようであるが、私は、学生がリポートや論文を書くときには最終稿に至るまで必ず印刷するように指導している。画面で見ているだけでは誤字脱字を見落とすことが多いからだ。すでに数々の実験によって、紙と電子画面では人間の認識能力に違いが出ることが実証されている。しかし、最新の電子インク画面を持つ機器は、この問題をクリアーしつつある。 電子書籍のもう一つの利点は、どこでも、すぐに読みたいものを手に入れることができるという点である。何百ページもある本でも、３０秒もかからずダウンロードすることができる。新聞は毎日自動的に機器に「配達」されてくる。一昔前は、洋書を取り寄せるには、丸善などの取次店を介して数カ月を要した。それだけに、注文していた本が届いたときには、まるで異世界の宝を手にしたようなときめきを覚えたものだ。 電子的な空間を闊歩するのも楽しいが、図書館で分解寸前の古い蔵書を手にしたときに伝わってくる歴史の重みは他に替え難い。茶色に変色した新聞の切り抜きは、人生の一部になっている。私の心は、１５世紀と２１世紀の二つの革命の間を行きつ戻りつしている。
• How Is Kyoto Viewed From the World?, Paper, Myself, Kyoto Newspaper, Evening Edition, 08 Apr. 2010, 初めて京都を訪ねようとしている外国人に対し、あなたなら、どのように京都を説明するだろうか。今、私はアメリカに滞在しているが、最近、アメリカの友人が初めて日本を旅行することになり、訪問先の一つである京都について、私自身が説明を求められたのであった。 実際、多くのアメリカ人はトーキョーとキョートの違いや位置関係を理解してはいない。しかし、キョートの実際を知らなくても、その名前を知っている人は少なくない。それはキョートの魅力と情報発信力のおかげというより、キョート・プロトコル（京都議定書）からの連想が大きいと思われる。京都議定書の効果が大きいことを、私は海外で何度も経験した。キョートから来た、というと京都議定書のキョートか、と返答されるのだ。しかし、京都議定書が２０１２年で一応の役目を終えることを考えると、京都議定書の妙味も、賞味期限が切れる直前にあると言える。 最初の問いに戻ろう。日本の文化や社会について十分な知識を持っていない人に対し、京都をどのように位置づけ、話したらよいのか。京都は、有名な寺社仏閣がたくさんある古都であり、数多くの大学を擁する学問の町でもあるといったことを説明することはたやすい。歩くルートを決めたり、立ち寄る場所を考えるためには、確かに、ある程度基礎知識があった方がよい。しかし、口頭での説明だけでは頼りないので、外国人旅行者向けの英語情報があればと思い、インターネットを検索してみた。 かなりの時間をかけてわかったのは、便利な情報は確かにあるものの、圧倒的に多くの情報が「帯に短し、たすきに長し」だということであった。英語のガイドブックも同様のものが多かった。魅力的な情報が少ないと感じた理由の一つは、日本人向けの情報をただ英訳しただけのものが多いことによる。多くの前提を必ずしも共有できない外国人にとって、日本語情報を英訳されただけではピントが合わないだろう。たとえば、南禅寺がリンザイ・ゼンの寺だと説明されても、どれほどの人がその意味を理解できるだろうか。 もう一つ感じたのは、公式な情報に対し、「場」の雰囲気を伝えてくれるような物語的情報が少ないということである。東京の場合には、米テレビ局ＣＮＮがウェブサイト上で提供する東京ガイドのように、文化から食事・宿泊まで、外国人が見て楽しめるような取材記事が比較的充実している。人はおもしろい物語やドラマに心惹かれる。ＮＨＫの大河ドラマを見た視聴者が、そのゆかりの場所を訪ねてみたくなるのは、場を共有してみたいと思う人間の自然な感情である。京都議定書が、多くの課題を抱えながらも、世界中の人々の口の端にのぼるのは、それが地球規模の新しいドラマの序曲となっているからである。 京都はドラマを感じさせる場所であり続けることができるだろうか。伝統を内輪向けの形式的な説明でしか語ることができないのは、肩書きでしか自己紹介できないのと同じくらい寂しい。まずは、自分自身を魅力ある「物語」として語ることができるのかどうか、足元を見つめ直してみよう。
• The Consideration of Education, Paper, Myself, Kyoto Newspaper, Evening Edition, 10 Feb. 2010, 自らの生い立ちと教育の大切さを語った、ある講演が昨年ちょっとした話題になった。今も、それはインターネットを通じて、世界中から見られているようである。ミッシェル・オバマ米大統領夫人が英国の女子学校で語った講演だ。 彼女は、シカゴ南部の労働者階級の家庭に育ち、両親ともに大学を出てはいない。アメリカ社会における経済格差は日本の比ではない。しかし、教育の力によって「今ある世界」と「あるべき世界」の間のギャップを埋めることができるのであり、また、彼女自身がその恩恵を受けたと語る。自らの出自・運命によって人生は規定されるのではなく、教育はそうした「運命」さえも変える力となることを、彼女は女子学生たちに語りかけていた。教育が生み出す「対価」とは何か、を考えさせる力強いメッセージであった。 誰もが教育を受ける権利を有している。しかし現実には、アジアやアフリカの多くの地域では、学びの機会を奪われ、労働に従事させられている子どもたちがいる。他方、我が国では、大学まで進学することが当たり前のようになりつつあるが、皮肉にも、学問の本源的な楽しさや、それが生み出す社会的「対価」への意識を見いだしにくくなっている。高等教育が就職のための通過点としてのみ見られるようでは、教育は「退化」していると言われても仕方ない。 今、私はアメリカの大学で研究活動を行うかたわら、いくつかの授業にも参加しているので、日米の教育の違いについて考えさせられる機会が多い。アメリカの大学の授業料は日本よりかなり高いが、それに見合った教育の質を保証しようとする努力や仕組みがあることも事実である。 学生数に対する教員数の比率は高い。クラスはすべて定員が定められており、日本のように始まってみないと出席人数がわからないということはない。多くの講義は対話的な授業ができるようなサイズなので、授業の中では驚くほど頻繁に質疑応答が交わされる。学期末の学生による授業評価アンケートには「教師はあなたにチャレンジしてきたか」という項目があるが、日本の大学でこの項目を一律に入れることは難しいだろう。そもそも、教師が挑戦的に問いかけることは肯定的に評価されるどころか、それを迷惑に思う学生の方が多いかもしれない。 日本の教育行政は、授業日数などの量的拡大が教育の質の向上につながると考えているようだが、果たしてそうだろうか。大量の科目をより長く履修したとしても、必要な文献を読む余裕もなく、対話を通じて既存の知識を揺さぶられたり、より正確な知識へと導かれたりするライブ体験を欠いていたとすれば、教育の「対価」を自らの血肉にするどころか、「運命」（楽かどうか）を先読みする狡猾さが向上するだけかもしれない。 「今ある世界」を見据えながら、「あるべき世界」を大胆に思い描き、その二つの世界の間を行き来する学問的探求心は、学生だけの特権ではない。自分の人生は高々こんなものだという甘えた運命論者にならないためにも、人は学び続けなければならないのである。
• U.S. Military Bases, Paper, Myself, Kyoto Newspaper, Evening Edition, 08 Dec. 2009, 普天間基地の移設問題をはじめ、日本国内における米軍基地の存在が引き起こす問題は後を絶たない。戦闘機等による日常的な騒音だけでなく、米軍基地居住者が突発的に起こす事件も、なくなる気配はない。 いっそのこと米軍基地が国内からなくなればと願う人もいるに違いない。しかし同時に、冷戦後の時代においても、日本はアメリカの戦力に依存し、また、その一翼を担っているという現実がある。憲法が規定する平和主義とは矛盾する現実を私たちは抱えている。 矛盾と言えば、アメリカ国内における世界最大級の米軍基地（テキサス州フォートフッド）で11月初頭に起こった事件を思い起こさざるを得ない。皮肉にも、世界でもっとも安全であるはずの基地内部において13人が死亡し、42人が負傷する銃の乱射事件が起こった。従来のタイプに当てはまらない「一匹狼型テロリスト」の出現に危機感が高まっている。 容疑者のニダル・マリク・ハサン氏は軍の精神科医であった。イラクやアフガニスタンから帰還した兵士たちの心の病を治療していた彼は、自らも近々アフガニスタンに派兵されることのストレスに苦悩していた。 また、ヨルダン出身の両親を持つアメリカ生まれのムスリム（イスラム教徒）であるハサン氏は、戦争への反対を公然と表明する人物でもあった。彼にとって、テロとの戦いはイスラムとの戦いと同義であり、アフガニスタンでムスリム同胞を殺さなければならない状況に置かれることを恐れていた。実際、彼は「良心的兵役拒否」を主張しており、その意味では平和主義的軍人とも言える人物であった。 このように幾重もの矛盾を映し出した事件であったが、そこにはただ一方的に断罪し、個人の精神的問題へと還元するだけでは済まない、もっと根源的な問題が存在しているように思う。 犯行の動機は調査中であるが、彼がストレスを高じさせ、残虐な犯行へと至った背景の一つとして、9・11テロ事件以降、繰り返しムスリムであるがゆえの嫌がらせを受けてきたことがあげられる。私はここに、彼の内面における矛盾だけでなく、彼という人物とアメリカ社会との間における矛盾を感じる。 アメリカは「信仰の自由」を建国に由来するもっとも大きな価値として擁護してきた。10月下旬に、ヒラリー・クリントン国務長官が今年の「国際・宗教の自由報告書」を発表したが、この膨大な報告書では、北朝鮮、イラン、イラク、中国などが問題国として批判されている。しかし、当のアメリカにおいて、果たして信仰の自由や平和主義者でありたいという信念が、十分に守られていると言えるだろうか。今回の事件は、その矛盾を、まざまざと見せつけたような気がする。 平和主義を標榜するわが国における米軍基地の位置づけも、この種の矛盾と通じるところがある。国家や軍隊が暴力を集中管理するという仕組みを、我々は当たり前のように受け入れてきた。しかし、平和主義と軍事力との間に生じる矛盾は、憲法改正によって解決できないほど、もっと根源的なものであるに違いない。
• The Climate and People, Paper, Myself, Kyoto Newspaper, Evening Edition, 07 Oct. 2009, ８月から米国カリフォルニア州に滞在している。こちらに来て最初に気づく、日本との違いは、真夏日の快適さである。確かに、日中の日差しは厳しいが、湿度が高くないため、汗をかくことがない。また夏期にはほとんど雨が降らず、連日、晴天である。その反面、乾燥した状況が山火事を起こしやすいという慢性的な問題があり、最近も、ロサンゼルス近郊で大規模な山火事が起こったことは日本でも報道されていた通りである。 からっとした晴天続きの気候のせいかどうかは知らないが、カリフォルニアの人々は陽気だと言われる。人の気質は実に様々であるから、簡単な一般化はできないが、開放的でリベラルな土地柄であることは折に触れて感じることができる。 京都にはたくさんの留学生が来ているが、彼ら・彼女らと交わす最初の会話の中で、しばしば、故郷の気候と京都の気候の違いが話題になる。興味深いのは、極寒の国から来ている人が京都の底冷えは耐え難いと言い、砂漠気候の国の出身者が京都の夏の厳しさに、くたびれ果てていることである。 数々の気候談義を経て、多くの留学生たちと共有できる一つの命題らしきものを得ることができた。京都に住むことができれば（留学生たちはしばしば「生き延びる」ことができればと言う）、世界中、どこにでも住むことができる、ということである。これは皮肉にも聞こえるが、よく言えば、京都に住むことは、気候に対する幅広い忍耐力を身につけることができるということになるだろう。 カリフォルニアとは対照的な湿っぽく厳しい気候は、じめじめした難しい人間関係を形成するのだろうか。それとも、日頃の忍耐に基づいた幅広い寛容を育むのだろうか。もちろん、後者のような効果があれば、すばらしいことであるが、実際には、気候が人を自動的に良きもの・悪しきものに変えることはないと考えた方がよいだろう。 しかし日本では、気候・風土と人間の気質を関係づける風土論が、比較的よく受け入れられてきた。たとえば、湿潤な農耕地域では多神教的な文化が形成され、他方、自然環境の厳しい砂漠地帯ではユダヤ教・キリスト教・イスラム教のような一神教が誕生してきたといった説明の仕方がある。しかし、この風土論が、自らの多神教文化を寛大さと自然愛の基盤として讃える一方で、一神教を排他的で自然破壊的なものとして侮蔑する、ある種の自国文化優越主義のために利用される場合には注意が必要である。 気候が人を都合よく変えてくれるのではない。むしろ現代において考えなければならないのは、人が気候を変えてきたこと、すなわち、気候変動（地球温暖化）の事実ではないか。自然と人間に寛容であるはずの日本は、気候変動を筆頭とする環境問題に対し、残念ながら十分な貢献を果たしてきたとは言えない。古典的な風土論が思いもよらなかった人為的な気候変動の時代に生きている我々は、育まれてきた忍耐力や寛容を、自画自賛の言葉とするのではなく、国際社会にも理解可能な、よき美徳や共通善として示し、実行すべきなのだ。
• Sabbath: A Source of Freedom, Paper, Myself, Kyoto Newspaper, Evening Editiono, 10 Aug. 2009, あなたは休日を心待ちにしているだろうか。あるいは、平日であろうが休日であろうが、区別なく忙しい日々を送っているだろうか。そもそも、「休む」とは私たちにとって、どのような意味を持っているのか。 多くの人にとって日曜日は休みである。それに加えて、土曜日や国民の休日が休みとなる場合もあるが、少し考えてみれば、このような習慣が日本古来のものでないことは明らかであろう。少なくとも江戸時代まで、一般庶民が休むことができたのは盆と正月くらいであった。それは、休むことを知らない社会、あるいは、休むことを許されない社会であったと言うこともできる。 開国以降、日本は近代国家としての体裁を整えることに邁進する。その時代、近代国家とは何かということを示唆してくれる人々の中に、在留の外国人がいた。宣教師フルベッキはその一人であった。来日当初、彼は英語教師として働きながら人脈を広げ、後に明治政府の顧問のような役割を果たしていくことになるが、彼が日曜日を休日とすることを提案したようである。 フルベッキは、西洋キリスト教社会で一般化していた休日としての日曜日の導入が、日本の近代化にとっても重要であると考えたのだろう。いずれにせよ、日本人にとって新奇なこの休日は、近代化政策の一環として、市町村役場や学校などから徐々に普及していった。 多くのヨーロッパ諸国では平均４週間の長期休暇が保証されている。また、ドイツやオーストリアでは閉店法によって、土曜日と日曜日の商売は原則的に制限・禁止されている。休むことへの並々ならぬこだわりが伝統として息づいているのだ。 この伝統の起源となったのは、聖書に記されている「安息日」である。神が命じたのだから、休まなければならない、という理屈は実にわかりやすい。日常の雑事からの解放としての安息日は、人の尊厳を支える根源的な自由を考えさせる機会ともなった。もちろん、こうした宗教的な理由だけでなく、今日の西洋社会における休日が、労働者の保護という側面を有していることは言うまでもない。 わが国でも休日が導入されて久しいが、勤勉の美徳が邪魔をするのか、休むことへの罪悪感は根強く存在している。たとえば、中高校生の部活動への献身ぶりを見るとき、そのことを感じさせられることがある。平日は言うに及ばず、ほぼ毎週末のように学校が生徒を拘束する様子は、休日意識の高い西洋社会から見れば、地獄絵図のように映るかもしれない。日本では、地獄の苦しみを越えてこそ達成することのできる何かがあると考えるわけであるから、もちろん、どちらがよい悪いとは一概には言えないだろう。 ただ私が危惧するのは、若い頃から「休む」ということの積極的意味を味わうことなく大人になっていった場合、繰り返す日常を批判的に見つめる目を養うことがどのように可能となるのか、という点にある。不自由への忍耐を要求する世界に隷従することなく、複数の世界を渡り歩く自由は、充足した安息の内に宿るように思うからである。

• "Dignity of Life" in the 21st Century, Paper, Myself, Weekly Buddhist Times, 01 Jan. 2001, 「生命の尊厳」という言葉は、すでに日常的に馴染み深い言葉となっている。その言葉は、人間（あるいは他の生物）の生と死をめぐる議論の際に、必ずといってよいほど引き合いに出されてきた。また、生命科学の急速な進展がわれわれに突きつける倫理的な難問の前で、とりわけ宗教家によって好んで用いられてきたとも言える。 しかし、「生命の尊厳」をわれわれに生来与えられた既得権として主張できる時代は終わりつつある。「生命の尊厳」を声高に叫べば叫ぶほど、複雑な社会状況の中に置かれた生命の微細な叫び声に対し無頓着な返答をしていることになりかねない。それほどに生命が置かれた場は多様化し、複雑化している。 したがって、今日の課題は、科学の侵攻に対する最後の砦として「生命の尊厳」を維持あるいは強化することにあるのではなく、むしろ、その尊厳の中身がどのように成立しているのかを丹念に探求することにあると言えよう。その意味で「生命の尊厳」は、当然の権利として主張されるべきものではなく、むしろ、もはや容易に前提にできないものとして、絶えず創造的に紡ぎ出されなければならない価値なのである。 ところで、複雑かつ根本的な倫理的課題を抱えた現代社会において、宗教はどのような役割を果たしているのであろうか。先端医療にかかわる問題の多くは欧米に端を発しているが、そこでは具体的な検討を委ねられた倫理委員会のメンバーに宗教学者や神学者が加えられることが普通である。 もちろん、日本でも脳死・臓器移植に関する議論をはじめとし、宗教者が関与する例は見られる。しかし、その際、宗教者はもっぱら旧来の「生命の尊厳」の代弁者と見なされている。少々うがった見方をすれば、政府が伝統的価値観をも尊重しているということを主張するためのアリバイ作りを宗教者が手伝わされている。 問題は脳死・臓器移植だけではない。人工授精や体外受精などの生殖技術は、われわれに生殖の新しい可能性を提示し、それに対応したガイドライン作りが進められている。しかし今のところ、それらは伝統的な家族観・男女観に基づいて実施が認められているのが現状である。つまり、新しい技術は、皮肉にも旧来の家族イデオロギーを強化する働きをしている。聖書の言葉を借用するなら、新しいぶどう酒が古い皮袋に入れられている（マルコ福音書二・二二）。このような実情の中で、宗教は「古い革袋」と「新しい革袋」のいずれを提供することができるのであろうか。 「古い革袋」を提供することは簡単である。「生命の尊厳」を呪文のごとく唱えていればよいからである。では、新しいぶどう酒（21世紀の多様な生命観）を入れるための新しい革袋を提供するために、宗教は21世紀を見据えて、どのような取り組みができるだろうか。最低限クリアーしなければならない課題を次に列挙してみる。 一）テクノロジーに対する批判的洞察。価値中立的な技術は存在しない。それゆえ、技術に対するバイアスのかかり方が、特定の社会集団の利益となるように誘導されていないかどうか、その公正さを吟味できる視点を宗教は持たなければならない。その意味で、宗教は単に「技術嫌悪」であることはもはやできない。 二）宗教的言説の再検討。ほとんどの宗教は、女性の生殖・出産を管理するための社会的機能を果たしてきた。言葉を変えれば、伝統的な宗教的言説は、少なからず女性の自己決定権を阻害する要素を持っている。したがって、新しい生殖技術に対し適切な距離を取るためには、まず自らの宗教的言説を分析し、それをあらたに解釈する必要がある。たとえば、キリスト教では、男性を霊的・理性的存在と見なし、女性を肉体的・性的・非理性的・感情的存在と見なす性的二元論が様々な教えの中に反映されている。これを放置するのであれば、キリスト教は男性主導の医療技術を補完することしかできない。 三）公共的にアクセス可能な表現・方法の提供。生殖医療がもたらす生命倫理的課題に対し社会的意義のある応答をしようとするなら、宗教は公共的にアクセス可能な表現と方法を示さなければならない。たとえば、エホバの証人の輸血拒否がいくら説得力をもったとしても、それは公共的な基盤になり得ない。信仰への誠実が自己充足になるのではなく、公共性へと広がっていく言葉と実践を、われわれは求められているのである。 四）安易な還元論に対峙できる人間理解の提示。ヒトゲノムの解析もほぼ完了し、今後、遺伝情報が個々人の人生設計に大きな役割を果たすようになるだろう。「わたしとは何者か」という古典的な問いは、今や遺伝情報によってもっとも説得的に答えられようとしている。それだけに、人の優劣が科学的装いを持って論じられるようになったとき、宗教は、遺伝情報に還元し尽くすことのできない人間の価値がどこにあるのかを明確に示す必要がある。 以上、「生命の尊厳」を取り巻く21世紀的な課題について概観してきたが、その尊厳性は個々人が幼少期より、様々な試行錯誤を経て獲得して行かざるを得ない価値である。もし宗教がそのプロセスに対し画一的な生命観や道徳を押しつけるとすれば、それは「生命の尊厳」への冒涜にもなりかねない。しかし同時に、宗教は人の人生に寄り添いながら、生命の尊厳の「初期値」あるいは「帰一点」を示し続けなければならない。なぜなら、人は年齢にかかわらず、自らの尊厳がくずおれるような不幸や失敗の経験に直面することが少なくないからである。アイデンティティが瓦解するような危機の中で、存在の基底になお尊厳があることを共感的に示すことは、21世紀になっても変わらない宗教の課題である。

• Feminism and Christianity, Paper, Myself, Kyoto Newspaper, Morning Edition, 07 Sep. 1998, 『南日本新聞』8月18日、『四國新聞』8月18日、『日本海新聞』8月19日、『埼玉新聞』8月21日、『東典日報』8月21日、『中國新聞』9月4日、『神戸新聞』9月6日、『京都新聞』9月7日、『神奈川新聞』9月17日、他に掲載（共同通信による配信） 苦しい時の神頼み。宗教や信仰の有無を問わず、人間は苦境に立たされたとき、思わずこの世を超えた力にすがりたくなるものだ。ところで、問題解決を期待されているその神は、果たして男なのか、女なのか。 日本では特に気にも留めてこられなかった、そのような問いが、近年、欧米では大問題になっている。キリスト教の影響が強い欧米社会では、長い間、神は男というイメージで見られてきた。しかし、この暗黙の前提が、今やフェミニズムからの問いかけによって、激しく揺らいでいる。 フェミニズムとは何か。多様な内容を包含するその思想・運動を一言でまとめるのは困難であるが、フェミニズムは、女性の政治的・経済的・社会的権利を可能な限り擁護するという共通基盤を持っていると言えるだろう。男か女か、という性の違いによって不平等が生じてはならないのである。 翻って考えるなら、フェミニズムが男としての神を問題視しているということは、男としての神が、女性に不利益をもたらしたということを示している。このことをメアリ・デイリは『父なる神を越えて』（一九七三年）において明快に次のように述べている。「神が男なら、男が神である」。 男が神であるなら、それは即座に、男が女を支配する強力な根拠となる。実際にはキリスト教に限らず、世界のほとんどすべての宗教が、男性による女性支配の理由付けを行ってきたのである。男性支配が当然視されてきた伝統社会において、その社会的メカニズムを支える中枢に宗教が存在していた点を見過ごすことはできない。その聖なる暗部が、フェミニズムによって明るみに出されつつあるのである。 伝統的理解に対するフェミニズムの影響の一端を、最近の英語圏の聖書翻訳の中に見てみよう。例えば、教会の礼拝で毎日曜日唱えられる「主の祈り」（マタイによる福音書六章九―一三節）において、神はこれまで「天におられるわたしたちの父（Father）よ」と呼びかけられてきたが、最近出版された翻訳の中では「わたしたちの天の親（Parent）よ」、「天にいるわたしたちの父母（Father-Mother）よ」、「天にいるアッバ神（God）よ」とされている。 前二者では父と母を対等に扱おうとする意図が見られる。また、後者において「アッバ神」という中性的な表記が、性における中立を意図していることは明らかである。後者の類例はイエスの呼び名にも見られる。「神の息子（son）」を「神の子（child）」と修正することにより、生物学的には明らかに男性であったイエスの男性性を弱めて、なるべく中性的なイメージでとらえようとするのである。 このように伝統に対する見直しがラディカルに進展している一方で、宗教的保守主義への回帰が同時に見られることも現代の特徴であろう。例えば、昨年一〇月、ワシントンで数十万人という男性キリスト教徒によるプロミスキーパーズの大集会が開催された。彼らは伝統的な意味で良き夫・良き父親であることを約束し守ろうとしている。しかし「男は神に近い精神的なリーダー」との教えに、全米女性機構をはじめとするフェミニスト諸団体が危惧の念を表明した。 また、米国最大のプロテスタント教会である南部バプテストが今年六月に「妻は夫に服従すべきだ」という新たな教義を定めた。南部バプテストに所属するクリントン大統領も困惑したと伝えられている。 伝統からの解放と伝統への回帰。近代社会の中では不可避的に、この両者が共存し、せめぎ合っている。その生々しい現場をフェミニズムとキリスト教の関係の中に明瞭に見ることができるのである。 最初の問いに戻ろう。日本人が寄り頼む神は、男なのか、女なのか。神という概念を持たない宗教においてさえ「男が神である」という現状は存在しているかもしれない。
