• A Comprehensive Study of Modern Japanese Discourses on Literary Theory: Introduction of Western Theories and Changes in the Traditional View of Literature

  Our project is a comprehensive study of books (research monographs, literary criticism, etc) and periodicals (academic journals, literary magazines, etc.) concerned with the topic of "literary theory" from the Meiji period onward. By extensively examining Japanese as well as foreign materials, we have been able to ascertain the achievements of modern Japanese writers, critics, and researchers in the field of literary theory. • An Integrative Study of the Zenkoku Shobo Network: Literature and Print Media in Wartime and Occupation Japan

  This project aimed at grasping the full picture of the activities undertaken by the network of publishers, editors, and writers involved with the Zenkoku Shobo, a publishing house founded in Osaka in the 1940s, which came to play a very important role during and after the Occupation, comparable to the role played by much bigger publishing houses. As part of this project, we carried out a survey of all of Zenkoku Shobo’s publications, from its founding and until around the year 1970; we analysed in detail the literary magazine “Shin-bungaku”, published between 1944-1949; and we examined the documents found in the archives of the late Tanaka Hidekichi, the founder of the above-mentioned publishing house. • Interdisciplinary research on the production of "self" during the period of Japanese modernization through the concept of "shutaisei"

  This research followed the history of the Japanese philosophical concept known as "shutaisei" (subjectivity) through an interdisciplinary approach, in the fields of philosophy, literature, arts, drama, architecture etc. Consequently it clarified in various aspects the change in self–understanding that the Japanese people received through modernization for a century and a half. Additionally it explored the consequent relationship between culture and technology.   The subject of this research is the≪Katari≫which underlay the intellectuals and artists in Japan from 1890's to1950's. We examined how the≪Katari≫was produced and consumed in the fields such as philosophy, political and economic thoughts, literature, architecture, crafts, fine and dramatic arts and so on. The≪Katari≫means the common fundamental fictions. They were created in order to fill the vacancy, which arose after the modernization had destroyed the traditional livelihood.
