高圧条件下における混合溶媒系の臨界普遍性と隠れた長距離相互作用の解明

本研究では、4000気圧までの高圧条件下における混合溶液系の臨界普遍性の解明を目指している。その中で、(1)溶液のマイクロメートルスケールの構造の解明のため「光散乱」、(2)ナノメートルスケールの構造解明のために「小角中性子散乱実験」を行う必要がある。2021年度はこれらの準備と予備実験を行い、以下の成果を得た。
(1) 光散乱実験で使用可能な高圧装置の設計・製作
高圧条件下での溶液の物性をマイクロメートルの空間スケールで明らかにするする手法として、本研究計画ではレーザー光(波長532nm、強度500mW)を用いた「光散乱実験」を行う。ここでは液体に4000気圧の高圧力を与えつつ、液体内部にレーザービームを透過させる必要があるが、この目的に合致した装置は市販されていない。そこで2021年度は、高圧条件下での光散乱実験を行うための装置のデザイン(設計)を行った。ここでの設計案をもとに、圧力装置を取り扱うメーカーとして「竹田理化株式会社」「株式会社テクメイション」の2社に製作を依頼し、2022年2月10日までに全てのパーツが納品された。さらにい、これらのパーツを組み上げ動作確認を行ったところ、3000気圧の高圧条件までは機器が正しく動作することを確認した。
(2) 高圧環境下における小角中性子散乱実験
高圧環境下での溶液のナノ構造を観測するため、日本原子力研究開発機構(茨城県東海村)にて、小角中性子散乱実験を進めている。2021年度は、中性子散乱装置に組み込む高圧機器を用いて予備実験を行い、3000気圧までの高圧条件を達成することができた。下における溶液の構造を、1ナノメートル程度の分解能で観測することに成功した。2022年度も引き続き小角中性子散乱実験を行い、4000気圧までの高圧環境下における溶液のナノ構造の解明を目指す予定である。, 日本学術振興会, 科学研究費助成事業, 2021/04 -2024/03, 基盤研究(C), 同志社大学
Long-range ordered structure and 2D-Ising like critical behaviors induced by salts in organic solvent solutions

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), static light scattering (SLS), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments were performed to clarify the effect of antagonistic salts on the critical phenomena of water/organic solvent mixtures. SANS and SLS results showed that antagonistic salts induce a highly order structure, so-called "charge-density-wave structure", in water/2,6-dimethylpyridine, water/2-butoxyethanol, water/acetonitrile mixtures. Furthermore, it was found that the critical universality changed from 3D Ising to 2D Ising with the addition of salt in these mixed solutions, On the other hand, it was also clarified that the dynamic properties of the solution obtained by DLS are not affected by the salt. Organic solvent solutions behaving like surfactants or polymer gels

Ternary mixtures, composed of water, organic solvent, and antagonistic salts, behaves as surfactant mixtures or polymer solutions depending on the conditions of the solution; in some cases, multilamellar vesicles are generated in the mixture. In addition, the mixture shows shear thickening under shear flow field. In this study, we clarified the origin of these surfactants or polymer-gel like behavior in the mixture containing antagonistic salts. Dynamical heterogeneity measured for multi-layered thin polymer films

1. The glass transition temperature (Tg) was investigated during annealing above Tg for stacked thin films of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The Tg of as-stacked PMMA thin films exhibits thin-film-like behavior, insofar as Tg is depressed and the dynamics of the α process are faster than those of the bulk system. Annealing at high temperature causes Tg to increase from the reduced value approaching those of the bulk.
2. We investigate the relaxation of thin films of a polyamide random copolymer. Two dielectric signals are observed at high temperatures, the α process and the electrode polarization (EP) process. The relaxation time and the dielectric relaxation strength of the EP process are described by a linear function of the film thickness d for large values of d. Soft X-ray emission spectroscopy of nanoconfined water

We have investigated the hydrogen bonding states of nano-confined water by using Soft X-ray emission spectroscopy. It is known that XES spectrum of water shows a split of the lone-pair (1b1) peak which has been interpreted as arising from structures with distorted hydrogen bonds (1b1'') and from tetrahedrally hydrogen-bonded structures (1b1'). We found the relative population of 1b1’ peak decreased along with a decrease of the micelle size, that is, the hydrogen bonding of water molecules confined in the reverse micelle becomes weaker than that of bulk water when a diameter of the reverse micelle is around 2 nm., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2014/02 -2016/03, Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B)
Hierarchical structure of soft matter induced by electrostatic interaction

Electrostatic interaction plays a dramatic role in ordering and structural formations of soft matter. We have shown an ordered lamellar structure is induced in a mixture of water and an organic solvent such as 3-methylpyridine by adding antagonistic salt composed of hydrophilic cation and hydrophobic anion. The heterogeneous distribution of cations and anions due to preferential salvation and the electrostatic interaction between these ions could be thought as the origin of the lamellar formation. Effective temperature of polymer supercooled liquid under flow

We developed optical tweezers system in order to measure effective temperature of the non-equilibrium glassy system. First, we built up measurement system as follows: 1) Polarized beam splitter and half-wavelength plate were inserted into optical path to acquire the availability of two laser paths. We confirmed that two different particles could be optically trapped on independent locations. Furthermore, it became also possible to control the position of the trapped particle as we like. 2) We built up the system by which we can observe thermal motions of trapped particles using quadrant photo diodes. With this system, we could obtain spacial and temporal resolution of 10 nm and 10μs. To our regret, we have not yet attained the final destination until now. Even after finishing the planed research period, we shall continue this research project. Surfactant molecules behaving as surface-inactive agents

It is well-known that surfactant molecules adsorb at the interface between water and oil, and the mutual solubility of water and oil increases since the interfacial tension decreases. However, we recently discovered that the mutual solubility of water and 2,6-dimethylpyridine or acetonitrile decreases when non-ionic surfactant, C12E5, is dissolved. That is, C12E5 behaves as "surface-inactive" agents in these mixtures.
In order to clarify the origin of this phenomena, we performed small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiment on a mixture of water / 2,6-dimethylpyridine / C12E5 or water / acetonitrile / C12E5. The SANS data suggested that membrane structures composed of C12E5, i.e., bilayer structures or micelle structures, are formed in mixtures. 電場による液体の新しい秩序:平衡、非平衡条件下における構造とダイナミクス

水/有機溶媒などの2成分混合溶液に塩を添加した系は、塩濃度に応じて臨界挙動の異常やミクロクラスターの形成が観測されるなど、古くから様々な現象が指摘されている。これら現象の多くは電離したイオンが周囲の極性溶媒を引き付ける効果(溶媒和効果)により解釈されているものの、未解決の点も多い。平成21年度申請者は、水と3-メチルピリジンの混合溶液に疎水性の陰イオンを持つ塩であるNaBPh4を加えた系を用いて中性子散乱実験を行い、メゾスケールの構造とダイナミクスについて詳しく調べた。
そ結果、3MPに対する水の体積分率を0.89~0.92となるように混合させた場合、100Å程度の周期を持っラメラ構造(T<318K)や無秩序構造(T>318K)が形成されることが分かった。更に、これらの相における小角散乱のデータについて解析を行ったところ、有機溶媒である3MPが厚さ10Å程度の膜として振る舞い、それが100Å周期で積層することでラメラ構造を形成していることが分かった。また、中性子スピンエコーの結果から、3MPで形成された膜は10ナノ秒程度の時間スケールで波打ち運動をしていることも分かった。
