  • Solving the Mechanism of Magnetic Activity of Supeflare Stars based on the Analysis of White Light Solar Flares
    SHIBATA Kazunari
Using the solar white light flare data taken with Hida Observatory SMART telescope and SDO satellite, it was found that the relationship (scaling law) between flare energy and duration for solar flares holds also for superflares on solar type stars. It was also found that magnetic field strength of solar type stars can be estimated from the scaling law between the Sun and solar type stars. We analyzed the time evolution of the large starspots of solar type superflare stars, by tracing the local minima of the light curves of the stars observed by Kepler space telescope. As a result, it was found that emergence and decay rates of star spots are mostly consistent with those expected from sunspots. We have performed spectroscopic observations of superflares of an M-type star, EV Lac, using the 2m Nayuta telescope at the Nishi-Harima Astronomical Observatory, and found the blue asymmetry of the H alpha line during superflares., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2016/04 -2019/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kyoto University
  • Survey of active solar-type stars with the wide-filed photometric observations and archival data
Maehara Hiroyuki; Shibata Kazunari; Nogami Daisaku; Honda Satoshi
Previous studies by using the data from Kepler suggest that a part of solar-type stars with the rotation period comparable to the Sun (~25 days) show much higher magnetic activity (e.g., superflares). We studied the rotation period distribution of the solar-type stars with high X-ray luminosity from grand-based photometric and spectroscopic observations. We found that some of active solar-type stars have the rotation velocity of < 5 km/s. We also studied the statistical properties of superflares on active solar-type stars by using the Kepler 1-min cadence data. We found a clear correlation between the duration of flares and the energy released by flares. This correlation can be explained if we assume that flares are caused by the magnetic reconnection., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2014/04 -2017/03, Grant-in-Aid for Young Scientists (B), National Astronomical Observatory of Japan

It has now become clear that the solar flares (explosions in the solar atmosphere) and related solar activity affect an environment of the Earth and often cause various disasters in our civilization. Hence, the forecasting of the space weather is an urgent issue for modern civilizations. In this study, we focus on extreme space weather events, such as solar white light flares (the most energetic solar flares) and superflares of solar type stars with energy of 100 - 10000 times more energetic than the largest solar flares, and studied the mechanism of the energy release in superflares, using observations of both solar white light flares and stellar superflares as well as magnetohydrodynamic numerical simulations., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2013/04 -2016/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kyoto University

Violent explosive events are often observed on the solar surface. Recent progress of solar observational facilities, such as Japanese satellite HINODE, permits us to investigate the fine structure and dynamics of explosive events. The characteristics of solar events are rapid heating of solar plasma and ejection of high speed gas. Main target of our present study is to observationally clarify the mechanism of the explosive events such as Ellerman bombs, spicules and emerging magnetic field. We are successful to pin-point the physical mechanism of explosion as the magnetic reconnection in the chromosphere., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2011 -2013, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C)

Magnetic reconnection is one of dynamic plasma phenomena appear in such as solar flare, terestrial magnetosphere and tokamak plasmas. We have investigated and clarified the fast process of topology change by magnetic analysis, fast CCD camera and soft X-ray CT, when a microwave energy pulse is injected into the helical field lines in the LATE device, a plasma is produced by electron cyclotron resonance and a toroidal current is generated spontaneously and increases resulting in formation of closed flux surfaces., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2007 -2009, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kyoto University

  • Experinuital Study of Large-Scale Emu Release by Transient and Intermittent Magnetic Reconnection

The large-scale energy release of transient and intermittent magnetic reconnection has been studied in the TS-3/4 device using two merging plasma toroids with arbitrary colliding speeds. Two plasma toroids with major radii R^-0.2m (TS-3) were collided and merged together in the axial direction by the help of compression force provided by external acceleration coils. The magnetic reconnection transformed the magnetic energy of reconnecting magnetic field first through the outflow energy finally to the thermal energy, increasing the plasma beta up to 30-50%, A new finding is that the transient effect of magnetic reconnection causes the fast merging speed as well as the high-power heating, even if effective resistivity of the current sheet is as low as classical. Their heating energy increases significantly with their reconnection speed, because the heating is cased by the reconnection outflow. The plasma colliding (inflow) speed was varied from zero to 30% of the Alfven speed V_A using compression coil/ PF coil currents. When the inflow speed was slower than 0.05 V_A, the plasma inflow flux balanced with the outflow flux, indicating the quasi-steady reconnection (dB/dt^- dn/dt^-0) like the MRX experiment. When the inflow speed exceeded 0.1-0.2V_A, the inflow flux exceeded the outflow flux in the early reconnection phase, causing clear pileup of plasma and magnetic flux in the current sheet. When the inflow speed was increased over 0.2V_A, two types of fast reconnection mechanisms were observed to appear in the late reconnection phase. When the gyro-radius p_i was relatively large, the fast inflow compressed the sheet width δ shorter than p_i, causing the anomalous increase in the effective current sheet resistivity and the reconnection speed. A question is how the inflow speed increases if the fast inflow over-compresses the current sheet whose effective resistivity η is as low as the classical one η_. When the condition : δ>>p_i maintained η^-η_, the inflow flux was observed to pileup around the current sheet, causing the rapid growth and peaking of the current sheet. When the flux pileup exceeded the critical limit, the sheet was ejected mechanically from the squeezed X-point area. The reconnection speed was relatively slow during the flux-pileup and became drastically fast during the ejection, in agreement with the solar corona observations. The sheet ejection was found to occur twice or three times. if we increases the initial reconnecting flux sufficiently large. These facts indicate that the plasma inflow fluxes larger than the plasma outflow fluxes transformed the quasi-steady reconnection though the transient one, finally to the intermittent one under the low resistivity condition (p_i<<δ). It is concluded that the growth and ejection of current sheet both increase plasma inflow (reconnection speed) due to its mass accumulation and ejection, respectively. Based on these results, the transient shaping effect of current sheet is concluded to makes the reconnection (and outflow) faster, even if the sheet resistivity stays as low as the classical one., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2002 -2004, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), The University of Tokyo

To guarantee human beings to work safely and effectively in the space, the forecast for strong solar flares is indispensable. And the study of the build-up and release mechanism of the magnetic field energy, which is the source of flares and solar plasm ejections, is essentially needed. To study the build-up and release mechanism of he magnetic field energy we need to measure the variations of the three dimensional structures of solar magnetic field over the full solar disk. The primary purpose of this research project is the construction of a good full-solar-disk vector magnetograph. We succeeded to construct the new Solar Magnetic Activity Research Telescope (SMART) at Hida Observatory, Graduate School of Science, Kyoto University form 2002 through 2003. In 2004, we made many test observation to examine the performance of the SMART and made many fine adjustment to optimize the power of the telescope. From these observation with SMART, we got the following results : (1)We confirmed the SMART achieves the best spatial resolution in the world in the full disk Halpha solar image. The better spatial resolution than 1 arc second is obtained over the full solar disk with the SMART. (2)We first succeeded to obtain the full disk solar vector magnetic field image with the SMART. (3)We succeeded in keeping the temperature inside of the telescope tubes to be in the range from 30 degrees to 20 degrees throughout a year in the atomospheric temperature variation from -17degrees (in winter) to 30 degrees (in summer) to stabilize the many kinds of optical elements in their best condition. We also succeeded in getting many new findings in the studies of mechanism of solar flare and solar plasm ejections called as Halpha surge by using the Hida Domeless Solar Telescope and Satellite instruments such as TRACE and SOHO, and we published these results in many papers which are summarized in a report book., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2002 -2004, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kyoto University
  • Numerical Simulations of Relativistic Jet Formation in Kerr Black Hole Magnetosphere
    KOIDE Shinji; SHIBATA Kazunari
Relativistic jets from several kinds of objects in the universe have been found. It is believed that they are all formed by violent phenomena near the black holes. Among the proposed mechanisms, the magnetic mechanism of the jet formation is becaming most promising because it may explain not only the acceleration but also the collimation of the jets. However, the distinct mechanism has not yet been shown. To investigate the magnetic mechanism, we have developed the general relativistic magnetchydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulation code. First year of this research project, we have performed the GRMHD simulation of the rather simple system consisting of the Kerr black hole, rare uniform plasma, and the strong uniform magnetic field. The result dearly showed the strong power radiation from the black hole through the magnetic field. It also interestingly showed the magnetic mechanism of the energy extraction of the black hole. However, most of the plasma falls into the black hole and no jet is formed. Then, next we performed the GRMHD simulation of the cases with the radial magnetic field and the magnetic field induced by the electric current loop near the black hole. With these calculations, we have succeeded to show the relativistic outflow, whose velocity is larger than 90% of light speed. Especially, in the current loop magnetic field case, the magnetic flux tubes bridging the region between the ergosphere and the accretion disk around the black hole are twisted by the frame-dragging rapidly. The increase in the magnetic pressure in the magnetic tubes (magnetic bridge) causes the explosive expansion of the magnetic bridges. The numerical results show that the expansion produces the relativistic outflow. In conclusion, the magnetic bridge between the ergosphere and the accretion disk around the Kerr black hole never be steady-state and should be connected to the relativistic jets directly., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2001 -2004, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Toyama University

During the period of this research project, we made several coordinated observations of solar explosive phenomena, or Hα surges, X-ray jets, EUV jets and flares in multiple wavelengths by simultaneously using the Domeless Solar Telescope of Hida Observatory and TRACE satellite. We got the following new results which all strongly support the magnetic reconnection model for explosive ejections of solar plasma. (1)From the high resolution observation of Hα surges with the Domeless Solar Telescope at Hida Observatory, Kyoto University, we found two kinds of downward-moving features in the Hα surge regions. One is along the same magnetic field line as that of the upward-moving feature. The other streams are along a different magnetic field line where no upward-moving feature was found. It was shown that these two kinds of downward-moving features along the different magnetic field lines are wellexplained by a magnetic field reconnection between emerging flux loops and pre-existing coronal magnetic field. (2)At the coodinated observation in August 1999, we succeeded to observe an emerging flux region appearing just on the solar limb simultaneously at Hida observatory and TRACE satellite. From the analyses of these data, we found that high temperature(one-million degrees)plasma jets in 171Å are ejected simultaneously with cool Hα and Lα surges. Expanding loops and shrinking loops are also found both in 171Å and Lα images. These phenomena were all explained by the magnetic field reconection. (3)Conspicuous activities of plasma ejections along a light bridge of a stable sunspot were, for the first time, observed simultaneously in Hα and in 1716Å. We found that(a)the times and velocities of the 171Å ejections are the same as those of Hα ejections and that(b)the appearance of the ejections are different from one another ; i.e., the Hα ejections have a jetlike, while the 171Å are like loops. (4)A flare productive active region NOAA 9026, which produced three X-class flares on 6-7 June, were successufully observed in the coordinated observation among Hida, La Palma, and TRACE.From detailed analyses of the region we found that a strongly-twisted emerging magnetic flux rope produced strong flares when it slipped out from the photosphere into the corona., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1999 -2000, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), KYOTO UNIVERSITY

This research project was proposed for unveiling the solar flare mechanism, i.e., energy release, particle acceleration, and their relation to magnetic reconnection. These have been the main objectives of the Yohkoh satellite, which was launched by ISAS in August 1991. With a large amount of data accumulated by Yohkoh in the past five years, in conjunction with ground-based observations, we have aimed to deepen our understanding on how these processes take place. The project team has been so organized as to cover almost all solar physicists in Japan. During the three-year term of this project, we have tried to improve the data archive and analysis tools, organized several mini-workshops on specific topics, and held a big symposium every year for exchanging ideas and science results. We have achieved the following : 1. Progress in data archive and analysis tools, including drastic improvement of the Yohkoh hard X-ray telescope's image synthesis program ; 2. Organization of collaborative data analysis framework with foreign solar physics satellites such as SOHO and TRACE ; 3. Coordinate data analysis using Yohkoh and ground-based observations such as from Nobeyama Radioheliograph, Mitaka Flare Telescope, and Hida Domeless Telescope, resulting in revealing the compLex magnetic field geometry causing flare explosion ; and 4. Progress in theoretical or numerical studies, which shows that solar flares and coronal mass ejections can be understood as different aspects of magnetic reconnection taking place in the corona with slightly different conditions. The scientific outputs from this project have been summarized in 158 journal and proceedings papers plus 66 talks (excluding those published elsewhere) in various conferences. The proceedings of the three big symposia we organized in this project were already published., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1996 -1998, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A)

Yohkoh has been working very well for more than five years and a half with no serious degradation and its operation entered into a phase in which we can do systematic activity-cycle related analyzes. Collaboration with the SoHO satellite had an important role. SoHO was successfully launched in December, 1995. Database of the half solar cycle and softwares for analysis were completed. Yohkoh Data Analysis Center (YDAC) set up in MSSL has playd a key role in organizing active international collaboration in Europe and became the European center of Yohkoh data flow. Compilation of atmic data helpful for analyzing the Yohkoh and SoHO data also made a good progress by activating discussions among UK and Japanese scientists. The followings are brief summary of the new results : (1)BCS without collimators could diagnose SXV emission lines from single active region on the solar disk that appeared in July, 1996, and collaboration with a rocket experiment, SERTS,made it possible to reveal the temperature structure of an active region in May 1996. (2)SoHO EIT/CDS and Yohkoh SXT simultaneously observed jetlets (tiny jet-like structure) around the polar region, and found that these phenomena were also triggered by magnetic reconnection. (3)Analysis of a large number of impulsive flares seen in HXT suggested a new interpretation for nonthermal particle acceleration, especially for low energy cutoffs., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1996 -1996, Grant-in-Aid for international Scientific Research, National Astronomical Observatory
  • 3D MHD Simulation Study of Solar Fares as Derived by the Satellite Yohkoh
UCHIDA Yutaka; HIROSE Shigenobu; SHIBATA Kazunari
Among the new observational findings obtained by the Xray Satellite Yohkoh, the new findings we derived about arcade flarings turn out to be quite different from what the classical "reclosing of once opened-up bipolar arcade model" predicted. In the present work, we concentrate on seeking a new model that can explain these new observational findings. What we have found by the analyses of the Yohkoh data were, (1) faint pre-event structure of arcade formation is not a simple bipolar magnetic arcade as assumed in the classical model, but dual arcades side by side with inner legs crossing is invorved, (2) what we call a "spine" comes up rising sometime after the dark filament flies away, quite unexpected in the classical model. This is consisted of multiple thin threads, and can not be the locus of reconnecting points as may be explained in the classical model, and (3) in arcade flares, we found that there exist large loops connecting the top of the flare cusp back to the photosphere on both sides, and there is a bright structure near the axis of the dark tunnel below the cusp. These have no model counterpart in the classical model. Those findings, in contrast, are exactly what can be explained in the model proposed by Uchida. We, therefore, revived the "Quadruple Source Model" that was previously proposed by Uchida, but did not become the main stream due to the lack of good enough observation to confirm its coronal characteristic features that time. We have developed the equiliblium solution into a time-dependent simulation scheme, and seek solutions. In 1996, we reached a conclusion that the quadruple source model we have been developing give most of the observed behavior if we start the dynamic simulation from a squeezed state with longitudinal magnetic field in the neutral sheet in the corona above the central polarity-reversal line. The configuration can store magnetic energy in the form of magnetic stress, and can release it when some triggering helicity is injected into the dark filament part and squeeze it out from the neutral sheet. The stress energy stored in the entire region can be released through reconnection then allowed the reconnection to occur at the neutral point. This model explain the above-mentioned observed facts pretty well, and we start reporting about it., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1995 -1996, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Science University of Tokyo

The sun observing satellite YOHKOH has been successfully operated for five years from the previous activity maximum and throughout the declining phase. All the scientific instruments onboard has been in good condition and the soft X-ray instruments can observe the quiet sun even at its minimum. Investigating the whole set of data, the keyword of "magnetic reconnection" has been emerged as a fundamental process for producing high temperature plasmas in the corona.Loop-top hard X-ray sources newly found by Yohkoh show consistency with the "magnetic reconnection scenario." Characteristic of nonthermal line broadenings seen in helium-like sulphur lines were systematically investigated. The locations of hot plasmas at the time of the line broadening maximum were either footpoints or loop top of flaring loops. Statistical studies of X-ray jets were also completed and they were mostly found in active regions with mixed magnetic polarity and strongly associated with emerging-flux regions. The interaction of emerged magnetic fields with pre-existing coronal field causes X-ray jets.Correspondence with micro-flares also suggests that the both phenomena come from the same mechanism. On the other hand, some evidence also appeared for the mechanism of basic coronal heating was something other than "magnetic reconnection." The Yohkoh dataset was compiled for nearly half of the solar cycle, with which studies of solar cycle and solar dynamo mechanisms will be done in future. The SoHO satellite launched in December 1995 will now station at the Lagrangean point and start its observations.Joint observations and collaborative studies with SoHO will be highly encouraged for the first space observations in the rising phase of the solar activity., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1994 -1995, Grant-in-Aid for international Scientific Research, National Astronomical Observatory

The Solar-A ( 'Yohkoh' ) satellite was launched in August 1991, and has been returning X-ray data of the solar corona and the solar flares. An important knowledge which Yohkoh has brought to us is that a full understanding of the coronal physics inevitably requires supporting ground-based observations. Such observations are being carried out both in Japan and in China, in optical and radio wave bands. This project aimed at combining high quality optical and radio data obtained at the observing facillities in both countries together with X-ray data from Yohkoh. We have conducted a similar cooperative research program in 1992-93, so that the scientists in the two counties were ready for the present research program. In order to report the results of cooperative researches, in the period from August 31 to September 5,1994, a workshop on solar physics was held in Dunhuang, China. Thirteen Japanese and about thirty Chinese scientists participated in the workshop. Studies combining Yohkoh X-ray data and ground-based optical or radio data have been initiated in China, which we believe are the contributions from this cooperative program. Another topic of discussion in this project is the space program on solar physics in the future. Both countries have plans to launch an optical telescope to observe the sun in high spatial resolution. The continuation of this program was strongly supported from the participants of both countries. Chinese side will apply for Chinese Science Academy and Natural Science Foundation of China, and Japanese side will apply for the Ministry of Education international research grant, and also for Japan Society for the Promotion of Science for support., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1994 -1994, Grant-in-Aid for international Scientific Research, National Astronomical Observatory

The Solar-A ('Yohkoh') satellite was launched in August 1991. This satellite aims at studying the sun in X-ray. So far the satellite performs quite satisfactorily, returning spectroscopic and imaging data of the solar corona and the solar flares. An important knowledge which Yohkoh has brought to us is that the solar corona is more dynamic and magnetically structured than we anticipated, and full understanding of the coronal physics inevitably requires the observations of the chromosphere and the photosphere with the best available resolution. The project we proposed aims at combining high quality optical data obtained at the observing facilities in both countries together with X-ray data from Yohkoh. For this purpose the Japanese participants visited Kiepenheuer Institute and discussed scientific programs to be pursued under this cooperative program. As an outcome of this cooperation, the first coordinated observation was carried out in the period of 3-13 August, 1993. Observatories around the world including those in Japan and in the Canary islands (Spain) participated in this campaign. Several interesting research topics were identified and analyzed in a workshop held in 1994 February. Initial results of this campaign will be presented at the spring meeting of the Astronomical Society of Japan., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1993 -1993, Grant-in-Aid for Overseas Scientific Survey., National Astronomical Observatory

The Yohkoh mission was launched in 1991 for the observation of solar flares with a coordinated set of instruments in X-rays and gamma-rays. The Brag crystal spectrometer(BCS) on Yohkoh has an order of magnitude increased sensitivity with less weight and size, if it is compared to the spectrometers flown in the previous solar activity maximum. The instrument was designed and manufactured under the Anglo-Japanese cooperation. The main scientific goal of this instrument is to observe the plasma motions and the transient heating and particle acceleration of flaring plasma at the initial phases of solar flares. The scientific analyses of the Yohkoh data have been done by solar physicists of the both countries. The completely blueshifted emission line was found in the very beginnings of flares. This new discovery supports the hypothesis of chromospheric evaporation. The sulphur emission from solar active regions suggests a possibility of the microflare heating of active regions. The solar corona is very dynamic and many kinds of activity take place as the result of magnetic reconnection., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1992 -1993, Grant-in-Aid for international Scientific Research, National Astronomical Observatory

The Solar-A ('Yohkoh') satellite was launched in August 1991, and has been returning X-ray data of the solar corona and the solar flares. An important knowledge which Yohkoh has brought to us is that a full understanding of the coronal physics inevitably requires supporting ground-based spectroscopic and imaging observations, in particular the observations of the magnetic field on the solar surface. This project aimed at combining high quality optical data obtained at the observing facilities in both countries together with X-ray data from Yohkoh. For this purpose the Japanese participants visited China in 1992 September and presented the most recent results from Yohkoh and other instruments. This stimulated the participation of Chinese solar physicists into the analysis of Yohkoh data. In 1993 February, Prof. Ai visited Japan and discussed specific targets of cooperative research. We selected three active regions to study, and scientists in both countries started data analysis. In 1993 July we held a workshop at Sagamihara for summarizing the studies made so far. Nineteen solar physicists from China participated in this meeting, and the proceedings was published. After the meeting the Chinese participants visited several observatories in Japan and investigated the possibility of further cooperative researches. As an outcome of this effort, in 1993 August China participated in an observing campaign in cooperation with Yohkoh for the study of the evolution of emerging flux regions. The initial results will be reported at the meeting of the Astronomical Society of Japan. Another topic of discussion in this project is the space program on solar physics in the future. Both countries have plans to launch an optical telescope to observe the sun in high spatial resolution. Technical issues on the filter instruments to be flown with the satellite were extensively discussed in this program., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1992 -1993, Grant-in-Aid for international Scientific Research, National Astronomical Observatory

Last year, we launched the solar-A satellite (now called 'Yohkoh'). This satellite aims at studying the sun in X-rays. So far the satellite performs quite satisfactorily, returning spectroscopic and imaging deta of the solar corona and the solar flares. An important knowledge whichYokoh has brought to us is that the aslar corona is more dynamic and magnetically structured than we anticipated, and full understanding of the coronal physics inevitably requires the observations of the chromosphere and the photosphere with the best available resolution. The project we proposed aims at combining high quality optical data obtained at the observing facilities in both countries together with X-ray data from Yohkoh. For this purpose the Japanese participants visited kiepenheuer Institut and discussed scientific programs to be pursued under this cooperative program. The purposes of this project are to organize cooperative research on various magnetohydrodynamic phenomena (reconnection, dynamo, MHD turbulence, MHD wave, jet, accretion, etc.) observed in many active celestial objects, and to encourage active communication between researchers, who are studying similar physical processes, in different fields (e.g., astronomy, nuclear fusion, plasma physics, geophysics, fluid mechanics). In order to accomplish these objectives, we held a symposium on cosmic MHD phenomena at Atami in September, 1992. More than 60 people attended. We discussed not only theoretical research results but also observational results in relation to various cosmical plasmas ranging from fusion plasmas to intergalactic plasmas. Specific items we discussed are; dynamo processes in fusion plasmas, convection and dynamo in terrestrial and planetary cores, vortex reconnection, magnetic reconnection and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in terrestrial magnetosphere, acceleration and dynamics of solar wind, magnetohydrodynamic phenomena in the Sun (especially on magnetic reconnection and dynamic phenomena in the solar corona observed by YOHKOH), jet formation in black hole magnetosphere, magnetic field in star forming regions, MHD phenomena in interstellar space, intergalactic magnetic fields, etc. Major results obtained by these researches are summarized in the following; (1) We compared magnetic reconnections occurring in the tail of terrestrial magnetosphere and in the solar corona, and found that the formation and acceleration of plasmaids play a key role in both cases. This has also been confirmed by 2D and 3D MHD numerical simulations of magnetic reconnection for both terrestrial and solar cases. (2) Various dynamic phenomena (loops, jets, spincules) similar to solar coronal dynamic phenomena have been discovered in disk galaxies from detailed comparison between solar coronal images taken by YOHKOH and high resolution optical images of disk galaxies. Numerical simulations have also been done for the Parker instability both in disk galaxies and in the Sun, which explains the formation of magnetic loops in disk galaxies and the Sun., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1991 -1992, Grant-in-Aid for Co-operative Research (A), National Astronomical Observatory

The Yohkoh satellite, which was successfully launched in 1991, is still working quite well in orbit and bringing a lot of new results. The satellite is now in the regular-operation phase. The Flare Telescope and the Radio Heliograph in NAO also started their regular observations and constitute a global groundbased solar observation network, as well as the Hida Domeless Solar Telescope. The collaborations between Yohkoh and the observatories on the ground have been much activated in 1992. Based on this circumstance several workshops and symposia were held, centering the results from the Yohkoh data. In September 1992, the symposium "One Year Research of YOHKOH" was held at NAO mainly for domestic researchers and the second Yohkoh Science Meeting was held in February 1993, in which more than forty people participated from abroad. The both of them were quite successful and stimulated a lot of discussions and future collaborations. One of the new observational results in this solar activity maximum is that a picture of the solar activity has been established which originates from the magnetic reconnection and the magnetic shears. In solar flares, the scenes of the energy release via the magnetic reconnection and of the chromospheric evaporation of abruptly heated plasmas in the flaring loop were actually investigated. It has also revealed evident that the solar corona is quite dynamic, that a small flare-like transient brightening, a sudden increase of XBP intensity, and a jet-like abrupt motion of plasma are very common in active regions, that coronal holes globally change their structure of magnetic field and that all of them are closely related with the reconnection process of the magnetic field in the solar corona., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1990 -1992, Grant-in-Aid for Co-operative Research (A), National Astronomical Observatory

1.The photometoric, spectroscopic and polarimetric observations of the active galaxies(Seyfert galaxies, Blazars,KUG and KUV objects) have been made with the purpose of investigation of activity in the nucleus of galaxies. A synchronous variation of polarization angle of OJ287 was found at optical and radio frequencies, but NGC4151 shouwed no significant light variations. A majority of KUGs was found to belong to the starburst galaxy which had large HII regions. Statistical analysisi of Blazar are carried out. 2.The analysis of intercting and pair galaxies revealed that the interaction of alaxies cause the star formation in the central region. 3.The dynamical processes in the concentration of a rotating disk was investigated by using MHD numerical simulation. As the rotating disk contracts, the accelerated gas which is collimated by the helical twisted magnetic field forms a bipolar jets. A continuous energy ejection of violent gas after the starburst formed the galactic-scale bipolar flow. Activities in the nucleus have been investigated on electronpositron pairproduction and on the development of relativistic plasmas in conection with hard X ray emission. 4.Axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric global structure of galactic magnetic fields was studied on the basis of generalized dynamo equation. Magnetic field structures in the galactic center originate from the primordial largescale magnetic field trapped to the protogalaxy from the intergalactic space. 5.Obsevations of compact sources with the higest angular resoulution have been achieved using a space VLBI and mm wavelengths VLBI. 6.Machine readable catalogues of galaxies and of extragalactic radio sources have been accumulated for statistical works. IRAS databese was constructed to be retrieved directly by identifications including galaxies and radio sources., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1986 -1987, Grant-in-Aid for Co-operative Research (A), Utsunomiya University
