  • Assessment of the effects of soil and the site environment on soil animal community structure in deciduous forest and coniferous plantations using soil monolith transfer
    Hasegawa Motohiro
It is important to clarify the determinant for the biodiversity in order to conserve it. Until now, we could not identify whether habitat selection of Collembola were determined by the factor derived from soil or by other factors. In this study we investigate the factors for determinant of collembolan diversity by the method of soil block transfer between conifer plantation and deciduous forests. As a result, the species composition of Collembola could be determined the factors of the place other than soil., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2014/04 -2019/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Forest Research and Management Organization

On the slope of Mt. Yatsugatake, we investigated the effects of the past land use on the soil property and plant nutrient use. Past land use for each site was determined by the information of old maps, drawings and aerial pictures. We observed the brown forest soil on the forests already existed before Meiji era, black and brown forest soil on the forests changed from grassland after Meiji era, black soil on the sites used as continuously used as grassland. The black soil seemed to accumulate more carbon than the brown soil. Decomposition of filter paper was faster in older forests than in grasslands. Nitrogen concentration in fresh larch needles tended to be higher in the older forests probably because soil nitrogen continuously accumulated after stopping to take out the organic matter from for the site. These results suggested that the conversion from grasslands to forests caused the change of soil property, decomposition process and nitrogen utilization pattern for the plants., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2010/04 -2014/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute

We analyzed soil biodiversity and functioning in forest and cropland soils to establish a sustainable land use. Forest management did not change soil community and structure, while fine particles and microaggregates increased with forest age. Cultivation of soil in cropland was detrimental to soil biodiversity and aggregates. However, no tillage with weed introduction increased soil sequestration in a short time periods. We conclude that soil aggregates which are formed by biological activities is important index for soil fuction., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2009 -2011, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Yokohama National University

, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2005 -2008, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute
  • Investigation of the relationships between tree-specdes diversity and the functions of tropical rain forests

The objectives of this study are to understand the control of the functions of tropical rain forests by tree-species diversity. In order to achieve this goal, we took an innovative approach in that we compared two naturally species-rich (Malaysia) versus species impoverished (Hawaii) tropical rain-forest regions. The working hypothesis was that a greater species pool (i.e. regional species diversity) could provide more nutrient-use efficient species to reduced nutrient availability while a impoverished species pool would provide lesser nutrient-use efficient species to reduced nutrient availability leading to a temporally variable biomass in response to nutrient availability. To test this working hypothesis, we set up one soil chronosequence in each region, along which soil nutrient availability changed due to soil aging and associated geochemical processes. We investigated the above-ground net primary productivity and nutrient-use of the major tree species in each region. The adove-ground net primary productivity was estimated by repeated measures of secondary growth of trees plus litter-fall rate which was measured bi-weekly. The intact leaves were collected from the major trees in each site and wet-digested to analyze foliar minerals. In Hawaii where regional species richness (i.e. species pool) was small, above-ground net primary productivity and biomass increased with increasing soil nitrogen availability towards a peak stage where soil nitrogen and phosphorus were abundant, followed by an abrupt decline phase where soil phosphorus availability declined. By contrast, such an abrupt change did not occur in Malaysia because more phosphorus-use efficient species replaced inefficient species with declining soil-phosphorus availability. Thus our working hypothesis was accepted., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2001 -2004, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), KYOTO UNIVERSITY
  • Leaf turn-over rate of forest trees in tropical mountain forests
KIKUZAWA Kihachiro; YUMOTO Takakazu; KITAYAMA Kanehiro
Four issues of problems were investigated concerning leaf phenological events of forest trees namely. Emergence pattern, timing of leaf emergence, leaf longevity and leaf habit (deciduousness and evergreenness) in tropical mountain forests on Mt. Kinabalu, Borneo island Malaysia. All shoots studied in the present study showed evergreen habit at least from 1994 to 1999. Leaf order against leaf position showed two types of leaf-emergence patterns. Actual observation throughout one year also reveals that there are two types of leaf emergence patterns in each of forest types on the tropical montane forests. Timing of leaf emergence was also investigated. Since temperature is constant throughout a year, rainfall and nutrient flush were considered to be important as a cue and critical resource for the new leaf emergence. The effect of nutrient supply on the initiation of new leaf emergence was tested by an experiment where nutrogen and phosphorus were artificially supplied. Results suggested the significance of nutrient supply on new leaf emergence at least in some forests. Leaf longevity ranged from shorter than one year to longer than 5 years. In any of the forest zones studied, there were variations in leaf longevities. Flowering phenology and fruiting phenology of tree species were also investigated in relation to fruit dispersal by birds., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1999 -2001, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), KYOTO UNIVERSITY
