  • Dynamic Behavior of Boundary Lubrication Analyzed by Quantum Beam with Mechano-Operando Mechanism

    In this study, we aimed to analyze the dynamic behavior of the boundary lubrication layer under sliding conditions by sublimating the conventional in-situ analysis to operando analysis in response to the strong need for clarifying the dynamic behavior of the boundary lubrication layer. Specifically, the dynamic behavior of the boundary lubrication layer under sliding conditions was investigated by combining various quantum beam analyses with a sample holder having sliding mechanism. As a result, it was confirmed that the interfacial structure and chemical state of the boundary lubrication layer could be obtained by neutron reflectometry and synchrotron-XAFS. In addition, we succeeded in obtaining the boundary lubrication layer behavior under the sliding condition by installing the sliding mechanism in those beamlines., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2018/04 -2021/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Doshisha University
  • Structure and Low Friction Mechanism of Soft Boundary Layers in Narrow Clearnce

    Understanding of the real situation of solid-liquid interface under sliding condition is quite important to clarify the tribology phenomena under lubrication. Particularly, though the soft molecular chains, called as 'boundary layers', are believed to form onto the top of low friction surfaces, their structures and physical properties are still unknown. From these backgrounds, the lubrication properties of boundary layers formed by additives in narrow clearance on sub-micrometer order were investigated in the study using a newly-developed plate-on-plate tribometer. The experimental results showed that the apparent viscosity of sample lubricant with additive decreased compared as that without additive.   • STUDY ON IMPROVEMENT OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF CFRP DUE TO RUBBER MODIFICATION OF EPOXY MATRIX USING SUBMICRON SPHERES

    Firstly, in order to obtain information on improvement of interfacial strength properties between rpoxy eesin and substrate due to rubber modification using submicron CNBR (Cross-linked acrylo Nitrile Butadiene Rubber : 70-100 nm in diameter) spheres, adhesive strenghts of an epoxy resin under Mode I loadings (both static and cyclic) were examined using DCB specimens. The experimental results revealed that The adhesive strength of the epoxy resin became maximum when the CNBR volume fraction was 10%. The interfacial strengths were greatly improved due to CNBR rubber modification under static loading as well as under cyclic loading when the fatigue crack growth rate was relatively high. In both cases, fracture occurred in a cohesive manner while interfacial failure occurred at low crack velocity including near threshold. In this case, the threshold was not improved due to rubber modification. Crabon fabric was used to evaluate the effect of rubber modification of epoxy matrix on strength properties of CFRP.The laminates used in the study were fabricated by the hand-lay-up method. Tensile and compressive strenghts under static loading and fatigue strength at several temperatures were measured as well as inter-laminar strength under Mode I loading. The following conclusions were drawn from the experiment. Mode I inter-laminar strength (fracture toughness) is greatly improved due to CNBR modification at a wide range of environmental temperature. It is more than two times higher than that for unmodified cases. Impact strength is also improved while on strength reduction in tension at any test temperature occurs as well as in compression. No reduction in Tg (glassy transition temperature) due to CNBR modification is found as well. That is one of reason for no degradaiton in both tensile and compressive strength properties.   • EFFECT OF INTERFACIAL PROPERTIES ON STATIC AND FATIGUE OF SHORT GLASS FIBER REINFORCED THERMOPLASTICS

    Firstly, the effect of interfacial properties between fibers and thermoplastic matrix (mainly Polypropylene) on static and fatigue failure of short glass fiber reinforced thermoplastics fabricated by injection molding and stamping was studied. From the test results it was revealed that the static strength of the FRTP sample fabricated using long fiber pellets was higher than that of the sample fabricated by conventional injection molding using short fiber pellets. The yielding stres was also increased by using long fiber pellets. However, the longitudinal modulus does not increase due to long fiber pellets. As fibers in the pellets are broken during injeciton molding process, 8 to 10 mm in length in pellets is enough to improve the static strength for long fiber pellets. On the other hand, no significant effect of usage of long fiber pellets on high cycle fatigue is found although long fiber pellets are effective to increase the fatigue life at low cycle fatigue. The fatigue life is increased 30-80% longer by using long fiber pellets at low cycle fatigue. The creep behavior is also improved much due to long fibers. Although PP matrix itself does not absorb water, PP matrix short glass fiber composites (FRTP) absorbs appreciable water. Water penetrates inside through the interface between blass fibers and the matrix. Due to water absorption, not only static strength but also fatigue strength decrease. However, the strength reduction under static loading is only about 20%. A possibility for fabricating PP-based FRTP which have high performance but being not expensive was shown by using low temperature plasma. In this method, PP sheets whose surfaces have been previously treated are stacked with glass fabrics and pressed to form FRTP.Due to this surface treatment, peeling strength increases as high as 50%. The static strength increases about 20%. Lastly, the effect of rubber modification of epoxy matrix using cross-linked NBR submicron spheres on both static and fatigue strengths of CFRP were shown.
