本研究は、これまで米文学・文化研究領域において、ほぼ注目されずにきた、19世紀初頭の南部における奴隷叛乱事件（ガブリエル・プロッサーの叛乱事件 [ヴァージニア州リッチモンド、1800年] 、デンマーク・ヴィージーの叛乱事件 [サウス・カロライナ州チャールストン、1822年] ）概要提示と、その文学的・文化的影響について考察することを目的とする。 具体的には、① 事件の背景と概要・影響の提示、② 裁判記録の読解、③ 小説および文学作品内の表象についての考察、④ 大衆のフォークロア形成と博物館等の記録／記憶提示およびその効果、⑤これら奴隷制の残滓に直結するモニュメント建立と撤去およびその効果についての分析を行うものである。 2021（令和3）年度については、１）ガブリエル・プロッサーの叛乱概要および文学表象についてのリサーチと口頭発表、２）デンマーク・ヴィージー像の建立に間接的に関連する奴隷制廃止を論じた研究書の翻訳、３）南部連合像の建立と撤去をめぐる歴史的意義とこんにちの政治性に関する口頭発表および論文出版を遂行した。 また、こうした研究進捗過程において、本件研究に敷衍的に関連する成果もあげた。例えば、それは、現代のアメリカを多角的に考察する共著書の編集出版であり、また南部人側から見たリーカーンの文学表象にいての論考執筆（現在編集作業中）である。, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), 2021/04 -2025/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Doshisha University - 被抑圧者たちの抵抗と再生――アメリカにおける歴史記憶と文学表象（Resistance and Regeneration of the Subjugated : Historiographical Memories and Literary Representations in America）

This research project conducts extensive research on the 1712 slave revolt and the 1741 slave conspiracy cases in NY city, as well as the 1739 Stono rebellion occurred in South Carolina, all of which are closely related. Also, this project explores the historical explanation/imagination of the revolt cases from the viewpoint of the governors’ connection and slave community’s network, as well as from the effect of the domination of European powers over slaves in the West Indies. This project explores the historical/cultural significance of early America's civic/slave insurrections, such as Shays' Rebellion (1786-87) and the New York Conspiracy of 1741, the subversive imaginative appeal of which influenced the popular literature of the time, such as Stephen Burroughs' Memoirs (1798) and "Hay-Mow sermon"(1798). The cultural impact of the events has also extended further into recent American literary works by Jean Paradise, Philip McFarland, Ann Rinaldi and Mat Johnson. This project clarifies how the myths and spirit of the American Revolutionary relate to the sensationalism and sentimentalism that emerged in American culture in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The project of Thomas Hooker and Connecticut achieved two purposes : first, it explored how the Connecticut plantation was established and secondly, it explicated Hooker's life and his works on Congregational church. Hooker was born in England, but was forced to exile to Holland to practice non-conformity against Church of England. He endured the hard life in the new world and founded the town of Hartford at Connecticut Valley. He preached sermons which support democracy and established the polity of Congregational churches, the most innovative Protestant sect, and inspired the ideas of the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, the first written constitution in America.
