Research Projects

  • Comprehensive Research on the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women: Systems for and Factors Hindering Implementation in Japan
    Yoshida Yoko
This research undertook to explore the status of domestic implementation of the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, which Japan ratified in 1985, or to what extent the Convention was complied with. The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, the Convention's monitoring body examines the periodic reports submitted by the Japanese government, and issues its Concluding Observations. In the research, the background and the status of discrimination in Japan that were indicated in the " principal areas of concern" and "recommendations" in the Observations were examined regarding the domestic implementation of the Convention, in order to conduct a comprehensive analysis covering domestic legal system, policy, judiciary, history, culture and society, and clarify the factors hindering the full implementations of the Concluding Observations in Japan., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2017/04 -2020/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Kyoto Human Rights Research Institute
  • Examining the Effectiveness of CBPR in International and Multicultural Social Work
    TAKEDA Joe
This study examined the effectiveness of CBPR by conducting four research projects on vulnerable mothers and children who have ties with foreign countries. In each CBPR, either/both participatory methods such as Empowerment Evaluation and the conventional methods such as questionnaires and interviews were used to clarify the needs of each community, to make an action plan to improve its community or organization, monitor the project, and evaluate each project collaboratively with people in each community. Although some of the original objectives could not be met due to a lack of time, the results of these four CBPR projects overall indicate that CBPR is indeed an effective approach to empower members as well as communities in international and multicultural social work., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2015/04 -2018/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kwansei Gakuin University

About 41,000 foreign residents live in Kyoto city and more than half of them are Korean long term residents (Korean old comers). Kyoto city is the best suited place in Japan to focus on the problem of aged foreign residents. We are now undertaking a Participatory Action Research with MORE-NET’s members. We conducted a survey on the foreign elderly and the Japanese elderly in Kyoto City, collaborating with MORE-NET as well as Neighborhood Associations (NHA). We explain about the results of our action research in this paper. We hope this action research will contribute to the realization of an inclusive and multi-cultural society., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2010 -2012, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Ryukoku University Faculty of Junior College
  • International Comparative Study on Self-Help Programs in International and Multicultural Social Work
TAKEDA Joe; SUN Linda; MENSENDIEK Martha
To develop a practice model which functonally ties international and mutlticultural social work together, qualtitative research on Filipino migrant workers was conducted in Japan, the Philippines and Hong Kong. The results showed the effectiveness of participatory action research for facilitating self-help programs of migrant workers as well as empowerment of both individuals and the group as a whole. It also suggested importance of forming an association of individual self-help groups., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2007 -2009, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Kwansei Gakuin University
  • The purpose of constructing an East Asian model of Social Work, research on theory and practice

With the purpose of constructing an East Asian model of Social Work, research on theory and practice was conducted with a focus on the relationship between social work and national culture. First, research was conducted in Japan, Korea and China, which looked at the relevancy of demographic factors, views on the care of elderly parents, and family cohesion. Results involved the development of a scale to measure elder parent care in East Asia. Using the factor construct model, the concept's validity was statistically supported. Results showed that Confucianism, which values the care of elderly parents is a variable that cannot be ignored, and that it is possible to presume that age and recognition of family cohesion are both relevant in views regarding elder parent care. Seeing how these results are embodied in social worker's practice behavior will be an issue for future research. In addition, taking a look at elderly lifestyles, culture, awareness and needs, while employing the concept of social support, a survey was conducted in Japan, Korea and China in order to understand the awareness among the elderly toward support(in their daily lives). Results confirmed that family is the most important source of support for the elderly, and is most highly selected. At issue next is to consider the construction of a model of theory and practice in assistance to the elderly, and its possible application. Next, research looking into the cultural foundation of social work theory and practice and its special characteristics was carried out, toward the construction of a social work model. Research that targeted staff of social work facilities for the elderly in Korea and Japan, obtained fruitful results relating to individual conceptions, Confucian culture, and family culture. In addition, a survey on views of elderly care was administered in Hawaii, a multicultural society., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2005 -2007, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Doshisha University
