Creation of channel-type forward osmosis membrane and construction of an ultimate zero-energy water treatment process
Matsuyama Hideto
The forward osmosis (FO) membrane process is an ultimate energy-saving membrane separation water treatment method that utilizes the phenomenon of spontaneous water movement through osmotic pressure difference. In this study, we created an original, innovative, and highly water-permeable water channel substance specialized for forward osmosis process, created a channel-type FO membrane incorporating the water channel substance, and created a novel ionic liquid-type draw solution (DS) that is temperature-responsive and can be recovered and regenerated by thermal phase separation. We also developed a water treatment process using these membrane and DS, and achieved a significantly energy-saving seawater desalination process that consumes less energy than the conventional reverse osmosis membrane method., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2018/04 -2022/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Kobe University
Fabrication Process and Chiral Functions of 3D Metal Nanostructures and Their Chiral Functions
Iyoda Tomokazu
The objective in our study was set to “transcribing asymmetric structure”, “exploiting asymmetric functions”, and “creating asymmetric materials”, by targeting (1) left-handed metal microcoils biotemplated from coiled algae, Spirulina, and (2) chiral silica based on twisted structure of silicon-centered tetrahedrons. The present study has achieved (1) mass production method of left-handed metal microcoils by biotemplate process and their dispersion sheets, which shows highly efficient electromagnetic absorption on millimeter wave and terahertz regions with a giant circular dichroism, (2) chiral template process to fabricate various kinds of optically active inorganic materials by using newly established “chiral silica” from supramolecular complexation between polyethylene imine and chiral organic acids., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2016/06 -2021/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas (Research in a proposed research area)
Molecular Grid Wiring for Molecular Circuitry
Iyoda Tomokazu
We proposed a new methodology for one-time and reliable measurement of electric conduction property of a single polymer chain, called molecular grid wiring here, to realize the original motivation of molecular electronic devices. The method replaces the conventional hundreds-to-thousands-times measurement with the nano-gap electrodes by one-time and reliable measurement using a specially fabricated gold nanorod array electrode. The molecular grid wiring is an integrated technique: (1) fabrication of high-density gold nanorod array electrodes, (2) development of surface-initiated/terminated polymerization wiring for pi-conjugated polymers, (3) development of surface-enhanced Raman scattering monitoring of the surface-initiation and surface-terminations of the polymerization wiring, and (4) development of algorithm to derive electric conduction property of a single polymer wire from the gross conductivity., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2016/04 -2019/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Doshisha University

1) The micro fluid device was modified for automatic synthesis operation. 2) By the use of cobalt phthalocyanine/fullerene nano particle, high external quantum efficiency to be unity was observed for the volatile compound mineralization especially for the initial time of light illumination of weak visible light of milli watt/cm2. 3) We have not obtained direct observation of potential structure by the use of Kelvin probe microscopy. 4) But, for the step like p-n junction materials, repeatable deep potential structure at the p-n junction was observed. 5) Furthermore, by the array of the step structure, increased at less bias potential photo anode current. It means the micro deep potential can be applied for macroscopic phenomena., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2014/04 -2017/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Tokyo Institute of Technology
Reliable method of the molecular wiring between nanodot arrays using the polymerization
IYODA Tomokazu
A reliable method of the molecular wiring between nanodot electrodes by using the polymerization as an ultimate bottom-up nanofabrication approach was proposed. First, a seed of the polymer, called initiator here, on the one electrode, from which the π-conjugated polymers grow. Second, the terminator is adhered on the other electrode. Both the lift-off from the initiator and touch down to the terminator could be expected in some probability and the resulting bridged π-conjugated polymers work as molecular wires. Concretely, surface-initiated and terminated chain growth condensation polymerization of 4-chloropyridine to yield poly(1,4-pyridinium) as molecular wire were investigated. Such enhanced basicity of the specially designed initiator and terminator control the polymerization in the chain growth manner. The chemical instability of the poly(1,4-pyridinium) due to electron deficient electronic structure should be improved for demonstration of the proposed molecular wiring., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2013/04 -2015/03, Grant-in-Aid for Challenging Exploratory Research, Tokyo Institute of Technology

TAKUO Tanaka; IYODA Tomokazu; FUJIKAWA Shigenori; KAMATA Kaori
In order to realize the three-dimensional resonant metamaterials, we studied and developed several fabrication techniques. We developed the novel laser fabrication technique that can create three-dimensional arbitral metal structures with 100 nm spatial resolution. We also developed DNA templating technique and metal-particles alignment technique for self-organized formation of resonant structures of metamaterials. Moreover, using electron lithography method and residual stress of metal, we made a three-dimensional metamaterial in 4mm × 4mm area. Self-organized structures of block-co-polymer or biomaterials was used as templates for metamaterial structures. Novel fabrication technique for high aspect ratio metal nano structures, which is termed "nanocoating lithography", was also successfully developed., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2010/04 -2015/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas (Research in a proposed research area), The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research
Visible light induced water splitting by the use of layered organophotocatalyst films
NAGAI Keiji; IYODA Tomokazu; ABE Toshiyuki
In the artificial leaf, one of the artificial photosynthesis systems, reverse reaction does not happen due to its two-dimensional separation of the redox reactions. The research project has a aim to design artificial organic leaves system for photocatalytic water splitting using only visible light based on our previous study of polymer film type organophotocatalyis of volatile molecules oxidation.
We have succeeded the layering of p-and n-type organic semiconductors on the precisely synthesized block copolymer membrane and investigated its photoelectrochemical behaviors as follows. 1) The optimized temperature of the substances transport in the hydrophilic channel was found to be relatively higher than the room temperature. 2) The temperature dependent photooxidation rate was evaluated for the p-n junction. Furthermore, we have submitted new concept of the one-path flow reactor of organophotocatalyst where the optimized absorbance of each layer was evaluated for the first time., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2012/04 -2014/03, Grant-in-Aid for Challenging Exploratory Research, Tokyo Institute of Technology
Thin film preparation and its extension to photofunctional devices of low-density organic polymer with transparency

Low density plastic materials have long history and reaches to transparency based on its small pore size less than wavelength of light. In comparison to inorganic aeregel, organic one has small example numbers. In the present project, the size of pore has been minimized to 10 nm. The control of the pore size was investigated from the view point of the gelation to form precursor. As for the photo functionalization, visible light responsive photoctalyst was incorporated to the aerogel. The evaluation of the photocatalysis was done for the oxidation of aldehyde, amine, thiol, and amide, to carbondioxide., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2010 -2012, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Tokyo Institute of Technology

Development of photovoltaic devices based on highly ordered porphyrin array film as artificial light harvesting antenna
ASAOKA Sadayuki; IYODA Tomokazu; YOSHIDA Hirohisa
The amphiphilic liquid crystalline diblock copolymer afforded a highly ordered cylindrical phase segregated nanostructure was used as a template for the site-specific arrangement of the functional molecules, which were regio-specifically introduced at the junction between a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic segments, at the phase segregation interface. The porphyrin units at the junction of diblock copolymer were accumulated at the cylindrical interface to give the circular and/or cylindrical porphyrin arrays similar to the chlorophyll arrays in the natural light harvesting antenna. The thin film of this copolymer generated larger photocurrent than that of the simple mixture of amphiphilic diblock copolymer without porphyrin unit with equal amount of ZnTPP., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2008 -2011, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kyoto Institute of Technology

Fabrication of Perpendicularly Aligned Nanocylinder Array Structures and Nano-Metallized Materials Using Block Copolymer Films

A goal of this project was to develop a fabrication process of nano-structured materials with a size ranging to deca-nano meter level (〜10^0 nm), where can not be reached with advanced lithographic techniques. Block copolymer nanostructures are built up with controlled polymerization of well-designed functional monomers and self-assembling of the resulting block copolymers, leading to deca-nano assemblies with two step bottom-up process, i.e., design of functional monomers and self-assembling of block copolymers. In order to elevate this project to the goal, the block copolymers were employed to be utilized as nanotemplates, which can make various kinds of materials nanostructured with specific shapes and sizes exactly same as those of block copolymers. One of advantages of block copolymer systems is to significantly expand processing areas, which can be applied for large area fabrications. During the term of this project, unique block copolymers consisting of hydrophilic polyethylene oxide block (PEO) and hydrophobic polymethacrylate with liquid crsytallin side chains were successively produced and the highly ordered hexagonal cylindrical phase structures were reproductively fabricated in the films. The various kinds of materials such as metals, metal oxides, ceramics, semiconductors, and polymers were utilized to incorporate into the PEO domains. The resulting hybrid thin film exhibited the hexagonal cylinder array structures which had exactly same nano-futures with the block copolymers on the substrates. Furthermore, nanostructure-specific functions in electric, electronic, magnetic, and optical properties were successfully extracted. The hybrid thin film especially showed anisotropic electrochemical conductivity through the functionalized PEO cylinders, which could be essential on new device fabrications such as biofilter, organic solar cell, artificial ion-channel, and anisotropically conducting nanowire., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2003 -2005, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Tokyo Institute of Technology

IYODA Tomokazu; KAWAI Tadashi; ASAOKA Sadayuki; ABE Jiro
Multi-step redox processes are reported in several it-conjugated assemblies of photoelectrochemically active pyridinium units, leading to function-integrated molecular assembly. The strategy has been set to strongly link each redox active unit and then to understand the correlated redox properties, (1) The arylene-linked viologen dimers showed four-step reduction processes in which mono-radical, triplet diradical, half and full quinoid structures are controlled photoelectrochemically. (2) The coordination assembly of bidentate pyridyl pyridinium ligands with paramagnetic metal ions exhibited photochemically tunable spin ordering through antiferromagnetic coupling of the intervening pyridyl radicals. (3) The d-π-dependent multi-step redox processes were demonstrated in various bis(pyridinio)-β-diketone metal complexes, together with their discotic columnar structures. The interaction path analysis giving a guideline for the coming molecular devices with electronic communication will be discussed. Interestingly, triplet ground state was confirmed in inter-ligand trans-configuration and intra-ligand configuration of two pyridinylradicals, while the inter-ligand cis-configuration was thermally excited triplet state, i.e., singlet biradical in the ground state. The electrochemical control of both geometric and electronic structures of the helical conjugated polymers will be also introduced by precisely fabricating pyridinium units in poly (arylisocyanide). Additionally, new modification of conducting polymers will be also introduced by anodic nucleophilic substitution of pyridine derivatives. Remarkable progress has been made in the study of well-designed coordination polymers to take the major place in supramolecular chemistry, which is providing various kinds of nano-structures, in several-to-decades nanometer scales, by self-assembly of small building blocks., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1999 -2001, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Tokyo Metropolitan University

Synthesis of σ-π conjugated non-linear optical materials by olefin metathesis
KAWAI Tadashi; IYODA Tomokazu
σ-π hybrid conjugated molecules have been expected as new organic materials with optical non-linearities with high transparency. Poly (silylene-vinylene) s are one of these candidates.
Syntheses of poly (silylene-vinylene) s by olefin metathesis were attempted for the first time. New compounds, oligo (silylene-vinylene) s (dimer〜oligomer) of linear type were synthesized by self-metathesis of tetravinylsilane and dimethyldlvinylsilane, and 1,4-bis(dimethylvinylsilyl) benzene using Re_2O_7-Al_2O_3 catalyst under mild reaction conditions. It was found they are σ-π hybrid conjugated molecules with high transparency, but higher oligomer and polymer could not be obtained. The spectroscopic studies revealed that their optical nonlinearities are weak.
Ferrocene is known as one of interesting compounds with optical non-linearities.
Novel selective synthesis of π -conjugated molecules with various interesting functional group by cross-metathesis were attempted for the two systems over Grubbs and Schrock catalyst. (1) Cross-metathesis of various kinds of vinylarene and vinylhetroaromatics with 1 -octene, and (2) Cross-metathesis reactions between vinylferrocene and a series of vinylarene. Self -metathesis of vinylferrocene was not occurred, but Interestingly cross-metathesis proceeded to yield heterodimer (cross-metathesis product) with high selectivity (73-100 %) in the presence of the Schrock catalyst. The mechanism of selective heterodimer formation was proposed., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1998 -2001, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), TOKYO METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY

Multi-nuclear Polymeric Complex bridged Isonitriles

The objective in this study is to replace cyanide ligands of mixed valence polynuclear metal complexes with specific electric, magnetic, and optical properties by functional isonitrile ligands which have potential to provide another functionality. In this fiscal year, structural phase transition of molecular arrangement on a single crystal of one-dimensional platinum complex with high electric conductivity.
(1) Molecular-resolution images of an electrochemically prepared single crystal of potassium tetracyanoplatinate bromide complex (KCP(Br)) were recorded by atomic force microscopy (AFM) during a tip-induced surface modification process in which the probing tip scraped off the topmost surface layr by layr. Two kinds of molecular images on the (010) face of the KCP(Br) crystal correspond to alternate layred structures consisting of tetracyanoplatinate layrs and interstitial ions. One molecular arrangement was assigned to cyanide ligands and interstitial K^+ and Br^- ions, in good agreement with that obtained from X-ray diffraction. The other corresponds to rearranged interstitial ion (K^+ and Br^-) layr.
(2) Molecular-resolution images by atomic force microscopy (AFM) revealed reversible ordering-disordering transition of molecular arrangements on the (010) face of a single crystal of potassium tetracyanoplatinate bromide (KCP(Br)) during dehydration and hydration treatments. The intracolumnar Pt-Pt distance along c-axis in the dehydrated crystal lengthens by a factor of 30% with considerable disordering, and the re-hydrated crystal shows well-ordered arrangement like the as-grown crystal, while the intercolumnar structures along the orthogonal direction is not varied. In large-scale AFM images showed that the monolayr terraces reversibly slides in the c-axis direction during the dehydration-hydration treatments, reflecting the molecular dislocation along c-axis. These surface structural change is quite consistent with well-known dehydration effect in KCP(Br) crystal, i.e., the lattice disordering and the decreasing conductivity., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1996 -1997, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), TOKYO METROPOLITAN UNIVERSITY

Ultra-anisotropic Conducting Molecular Device by Precise Control of Polymerization
SHIMIDZU Takeo; SEGAWA Hiroshi; IYODA Tomokazu
The preparative method for organic thin films of various functional materials, especially those with specific ultra-fine structures, is one of the significant strategy for realizing a coming molecular electronic device. Novel type of functions reflecting in ultra- fine film structures could be expected when the designed structural dimension reaches less than hundreds angstrom order. Our aim was to do those by using conducting polymer with interesting electric and optical properties as a hopeful material and Langmuir-Blodgett technique as a basic preparative method.
1. Several amphiphilic pyrrole derivatives were synthesized. Their monomeric Langmuir-Blodgett films were treated with unique electropolymerization, followed by conducting polymer LB films having layered structure of conducting polypyrrole and insulating long alkyl chain layers. The resulting LB film showed 10-order anisotropy between lateral and perpendicular conductivities. The layered structure was confirmed by electron microscopic observation of the cross section and X-ray diffraction patterns.
2. The above method was applied to other conducting polymers, polyaniline and polythiophene, so as to generalize our successful result. In case of polyaniline, pH dependence of conductivity is shown in polymerization. In case of polythiophene, high conductivity and stability towards air and moisture are expected. Another method is first to prepare amorphous polypyrrole with a long alkyl dopant through electrochemically anodic doping which we have reported previously, and then to obtain its LB film with 3-order anisotropy of conductivity. The above results provides new approach to design conducting polymer ultra-thin films and to gift to them new type of functions, including quantum-mechanical functions., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 1988 -1989, Grant-in-Aid for General Scientific Research (B), KYOTO UNIVERSITY
