  • Clarification of magmatic and tectonic evolution of Quaternary granite
    Ito Hisatoshi
The entire magmatic and tectonic evolution history of the Earth’s youngest exposed granite, Kurobegawa Granite, Japan Alps, was investigated using mainly U-Pb dating and paleomagnetism. As a result, it was revealed that the granite was formed not by a single intrusion but by multiple intrusion episodes spanning from 2.5 million years ago to 0.8 million years ago. Moreover, the granite was cooled below the magnetization temperature of ~600 degrees C during the Brunhes chron (since 0.77 million years ago) and the Japan Alps has experienced a rapid uplift and erosion during this time period without significant tilting as opposed to a commonly accepted theory., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2016/04 -2019/03, Coinvestigator, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry
  • Reconstruction of Holocene environmental changes based on magnetic properties of lacustrine and inner-bay sediments
Hayashida Akira; FUKUMA Koji; ANRAKU Kazuhiro; TAKANASHI Yutaro
Intending to contribute high-resolution chronology and environment study, we investigated magnetic properties of the Holocene lacustrine and inner-bay sediments, including remanent magnetization, variation of magnetic concentration, coercivity distribution and thermomagnetic properties. Although the sediments from brackish-water basins, Lake Ogawara and Lake Abashiri, had suffered loss of magnetic minerals possibly due to reductive diagenesis, high-coercivity magnetic minerals, hematite and goethite, were enhanced in the topmost sediment from the Haneji Inner-Bay and the Shioya Bay on Okinawa Island, suggesting significant runoff of red soils from the watershed. On the other hand, sediments from Ichi-no-megata, Beppu Bay and a fresh-water interval of Lake kushu are characterized by stable remanent magnetization. These results are correlative to the standard record from Lake Biwa, representing regional records of Holocene paleomagnetic secular variation of the Japanese Islands., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2015/04 -2018/03, Coinvestigator not use grants, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Doshisha University
  • Age determination of archeological materials based on the geomagnetic intensity
Fukuma Koji; ISOBE Hiroshi; SAITO TAKESHI
We performed archeointensity studies on archeological materials and volcanic rocks in order to construct the reference curve in Japan. Sekki pottery sherds evacuated from Doshisha University campus in Kyoto have proved to provide faithful records of the geomagnetic field. Jiki potteries whose weak magnetization is still measurable with a high-sensitivity magnetometer are promising targets to retrieve the records of the recent several centuries. Volcanic rocks assigned with document-based ages are most suitable for establishing the reference curve. By using rapidly cooled facies such as clinkers and scorias we observed ideal behaviors during the Thellier experiments. Therefore we did obtain the unparalleled high-quality archeointensity data from the volcanic rocks without any age uncertainties. A fully automated magnetometer, for which the controlling software was developed by ourselves, was quite useful for the Thellier measurements., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2012/04 -2016/03, Principal investigator, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Doshisha University

  • Geomagnetic field intensity variation deduced from oceanic crust
FUKUMA Koji; ISOBE Hiroshi; HAYASHIDA Akira
To clarify the variation of the geomagnetic field intensity is important in order to elucidate the effect of shielding against cosmic rays and solar wind by the geomagnetic field. Past geomagnetic field intensities were determined using the oceanic crust that was erupted continuously over the past 100 million years and has recorded the geomagnetic field at the time of cooling. We found that geomagnetic field intensities are reliably retrieved from rapidly-quenched glassy and cryptocrystalline part of pillow lavas at the top of the oceanic crust. In addition, we were able to establish a protocol for screening subaerial lavas based on various magnetic measurements., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2009 -2011, Principal investigator, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Doshisha University

  • Variation of dust input into the North Pacific Ocean
FUKUMA Koji; HAYASHIDA Akira; HARADA Naomi; SHIBUYA Hidetoshi
To investigate the impact of dust input on climate and ocean conditions, we studies the relationship between the variation of wind-driven dust input from the Eurasia continent into the North Pacific Ocean and the climate condition in this region. It has been known that many kinds of gases like carbon dioxide are exchanged vigorously between ocean and atmosphere in the North Pacific region, and that the amount of dust input into the ocean affects carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere and would lead to the global climate change. First, we established the age-depth relation for sediment cores collected from the North Pacific Ocean using paleointensity stratigraphy. In the North Pacific high temporal resolution records have been unavailable because existing dating methods such as C14 dating or oxygen isotope stratigraphy are not applicable to siliceous sediments occupying the North Pacific. We used U-channel samplers to cover the whole interval of cored sediments and measured natural remanent magnetizations at 2 cm intervals. The stability of natural remanent magnetization was examined using alternating field demagnetization and anhystretic remanent magnetization was used to normalize the intensity of natural remanent magnetization to detemine the paleointensity of geomagnetic field. Comparing the measured paleointesity data with well-dated paleointensity records, we could obtain the high-resolution age models on several sediment cores for the past 800 kyr. Second, dust input was estimated from the content and grain size variations of magnetic minerals. We measured magnetic hysteresis loops, magnetic moments at low temperature and thermomagnetic curves using a newly custom-made Curie balance. Two types of sediments are well distinguished from magnetic hysteresis measurements and they are responsible to variable oxidizing/reducing conditon. Based on the paleointensity stratigraphy we could obtain high-resolution temporal records of many kinds of magnetic properties and found that the variations of dust input and ocean condition in the North Pacific are well correlated to the glacial-interglacial cycle., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2002 -2003, Principal investigator, Competitive research funding, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Kumamoto University
