Research on Groups of Multiple Buddhist Sculptures: With a Focus on the Iconographic Sources and the Division of Labor in Production

This research examined Buddhist sculptures that were made in groups and considers their iconographic sources and the division of labor used in their production. Numerous cases were examined for this project, including the especially important examples of (1) Standing Four Guardian Kings at Kaijusen-ji, Kyoto, (2) Ten Great Disciples at Shomyo-ji, Kanagawa, (3) Standing Twelve Heavenly Generals at Bussho-ji, Mie, and (4) Twenty-eight Classes of Beings at Seishin-ji, Hiroshima. The data obtained from these studies were published in a report in March 2016. Special focus was made on groups of Twelve Heavenly Generals in the Museo d'Arte Orientale di Venezia, the Kamakura Museum of National Treasures, and Hojobo, Kanagawa. In addition to basic data, the report includes considerations on their icongraphic sources as well as issues pertaining to their production., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2012/04 -2016/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B)
Basic research on ancient and medieval statues of Shiga prefecture: for the accumulation of fundamental data and photos

Shiga prefecture follows Nara and Kyoto prefectures in the number of extant ancient Buddhist sculptures, including those designated as National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. And yet, today we lack basic data (measurements, materials, composition/construction, condition) and photographs that are the essential tools for the study of many of those sculptures in Shiga prefecture. This survey and study identified those sculptures in Shiga prefecture for which we lack this basic information. The first goal of this study was to share the procured data and photographs with local boards of education, museums, art museums, the NRICPT, related research scholars and those who cooperated with the project. Second, the project aimed to contribute to the local efforts for the preservation and conservation of cultural heritage items, and to contribute to the display activities of local museums. In all, the project surveyed 30 works over the course of three years., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2012/04 -2015/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Independent Administrative Institution National Institutes for Cultural Heritage Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties
A Comprehensive Investigation of Wood in Japan and Their Cultural

This research examines wood not only as material and medium for sculptures and carvings but also from the perspective of trees themselves as objects of faith and worship and as subjects depicted in art. The study also focuses on the spiritual consciousness of the Japanese towards trees. As a result of pursuing our research from these viewpoints, important discoveries in the relationship between people and trees were found. For example, the selection of woods-such as Japanese horse chestnut (Aesculus turbinata Blume) for a seated image of a deity, which is purported to be one of the ten kings of hell, at Kumano Shrine in Yamagata Prefecture and camphor (Cinnamomum camphora) for a standing image of a thousand armed Kannon at Takyo-ji Temple in Shizuoka Prefecture-was not necessarily determined by their material quality but for their religious or spiritual significance. These findings indicate a spiritual awareness in Japan towards trees., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2007 -2010, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Kyoto National Museum
Decorative Elements of Ancient Japanese Buddhist Sculpture
WASHIZUKA Hiromitsu; INAMOTO Yasuo; IWATA Shigeki; KAJITANI Ryoji; INOUE Kazutoshi; YAMAZAKI Takayuki
This research was conducted with the aim of carrying out a comprehensive reexamination of ancient (Asuka through Nara-era) Japanese Buddhist sculpture from the perspective of the concept of shogon (Buddhist ornamentation). In the course of conducting the research, the greatest priority was placed on selecting issues that spanned various related disciplines from the widest possible perspective and preparing materials of the highest reliability in order that they serve as a basis for future research. The following is a summary outline of the achievements of three years of research.
(a) As regards the preparation of basic materials, among the works concerned with shogon of the ancient period, the kohai, nimbi, of the Nara period were selected as particularly worthy of attention, and results more systematic and precise than those that had been attained previously were achieved through organized joint research, which resulted in the ground-breaking achievements. For example :
(1) A precise investigation of the now-fragmented kohai of the standing Juichimen Kannon statute at Shorin-ji temple (including the creation of a accurately measured diagram and optical analysis) and consideration of the design of a hypothetical reproduction based on the these studies.
(2) Creation of a precise tracing of the kohai of the Juichimen Kannon of the Nigatsudo at Todai-ji temple, conforming exactly to its original dimensions.
(3) A precise investigation (including an optical analysis), focusing on gaining an understanding of the structure of the three pieces of the kohai at the Denpo-do of Horyu-ji temple.
Introductory explanations and records of the investigations were added to the various photographs and drawings obtained in the process of conducting the research, and all were recorded together in the report of the results of the research, which has been titled Chosa kenkyu hen (Investigations and Research Volume).
(b) Each of the leaders of the various groups involved in the research over the three-year period considered various issues concerned with the ornamentation of Buddhist sculpture in ancient Japan, and as a result, nine papers written by experts in a variety of disciplines, including not only the history of sculpture, but also the histories of painting and architecture, history in general and archaeology, were published. These appear in the report of the results of the research under the title Ronko hen (Research Studies Volume).
(c) For each of the three years, leading scholars from Japan and abroad were invited to deliver papers on related topics, and the topics then became the subject of scholarly debate between the visiting scholars and those in charge of research at the museum at conferences known as Kokusai kenkyu shukai (International Research Forums). Records of the first and second forums are found in the report of research results.
(d) The results of this research are also available at the home page of the Nara National Museum., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2000 -2002, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Nara National Museum
