A Study of the History of Advertising in Kansai Based on a Survey of All Actual Advertisements in the Early Advertising Industry Magazine "PRESARTO"

This study investigated the entire history of PRESARTO. That PRESARTO collected advertising materials and published magazines is known, but most of its activities are a mystery. PRESARTO published a monthly magazine critiquing advertisements, most of which were not famous, and collected and distributed general ads, over 6,200 ads in all. Their activities came out monthly from 1937 until the late ’70s, with the exclusion of the war years. This study compiled two databases: one of more than 6,200 advertising works collected by PRESARTO, and the other of 312 issues of the magazine. This study aimed to correct the bias of previous research that focused only on famous works in the history of advertising.

For this study, the bibliography consisted of approximately 12,000 documents, which is far beyond the standard number. Using those documents as reference materials, 15 sub-themes were established, and a symposium was held on Examining Research Which Overlooks the Role of Mannensha and Osaka in Achievements in Advertising Media History Studies. From the viewpoints of sociology, design history, contemporary Japanese history, media studies, and advertising theory, we more closely examined the role of Mannensha and Osaka in the establishment of modern advertising, as well as the various factors that affected that role, the media industry and industry trends as well as changes in the structure of the industry, the views and power of traction of prominent individuals, and media events (e.g. exposition) and their relationship to advertising., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), 2012/04 -2016/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C)
