本研究の目的は、英語による談話の背後にある論理展開のプロセスを、認知言語学の理論的枠組とコーパス・データを活用してモデル化することである。研究の初年度である本年度には以下のことを実施した。 第１に、理論的調査の一環として、認知文法および構文文法を中心とした先行研究にあたり、論理展開の概念構造に関する知見を精査した。その結果、談話の論理の背後にある構造を体系的に抽出して分析するためには、従来の理論を大きく拡張する必要があることが明らかになった。とりわけ階層的な意味構造の構築・理解のメカニズムと、談話の時間軸に沿った概念構造更新のメカニズムを適切に扱える枠組が求められる。 第２に、本研究で開発している英語プレゼンテーション話し言葉コーパス・システムであるTED Corpus Search Engine（TCSE）を用いて実例データを抽出・分類するための機能を実装した。話し言葉の論理展開においては、いわゆる談話標識の使用が重要な役割を果たしているため、それらをできるだけ多く採取し、量的・質的な分析にかけることが必要である。そこで、約3,000点の英語プレゼンテーション動画のトランスクリプトで構成されるTEDコーパスから、談話標識として用いられている語句を自動的に抽出する機能を開発した。本機能の試験版はすでにTCSEに組み込み済みである。TCSEは https://yohasebe.com/tcse で利用することができる。 第３に、TCSEの様々な機能とその使い方をマニュアルとして文書化し、本研究の成果のうちすでに一般公開されている部分の利用がより容易になるようにした。本マニュアルは https://tcse.gitbook.io で閲覧可能である。, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), 2018/04 -2022/03, Principal investigator, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Doshisha University - Research on construction of Japanese reading and writing support system for middle and upper level learners

We constructed two web systems aimed at supporting Japanese learners' reading and writing. The first is a system "jReadability" that automatically determines the readability of sentences for the purpose of reading comprehension, and the second is "jWriter" that automatically determines the ability value of sentences to support composition writing. "JReadability" implements a function to automatically determine the readability of the input text at six levels. "JWriter" has implemented a function to automatically determine the proficiency of the input sentence to 5 levels. GoodWriting Rater, a web-based support tool for Japanese as a second language writing education and evaluation, has been developed by combining human writing performance evaluation with automatic estimation of writing levels using a machine learning approach. When an essay of the “comparison and opinion/argumentation” type is inputted, our system carries out automatic level classification according to the multiple traits of “holistic,” “purpose & content,” “organization & cohesion,” and “Japanese proficiency,” providing detailed analysis of text information and highlighting meta language used within the text. Sample essays of different levels and evaluation flowcharts are available on our website. This project aimed to develop a set of resources and methodologies that enable learners of English to improve their skills based on what they have already built up in their preceding learning activities. The research and development in accordance with the theories of cognitive linguistics and the usage based model of language successfully produced the following: 1) a list of linguistic constructions in English with example sentences that optimize the learners’ preexisting linguistic knowledge; 2) an web-based system called TED Corpus Search Engine (TCSE) that allows the learner to read and hear the words and phrases in the real context; 3) another web-based system utilizing a speech recognition engine which evaluates spoken English text input by the learner. The research presented in this paper aims at advancing text readability studies for Japanese and devises a practical and useful system that contributes to Japanese language teaching, learning, and research. More specifically, utilizing leveled corpora mainly consisting of text from textbooks of Japanese, we produced the following formula to measure the readability level of a given text in six scales: X = {mean length of sentence * -0.056} + {proportion of kango * -0.126} + {proportion of wago * -0.042} + {proportion of number of verbs among all words * -0.145} + {proportion of number of auxiliary verbs * -0.044} + 11.724 (R2=.896) . The formula was tested against another set of leveled text in Japanese to prove its reliability. This research project aimed at elucidating the way linguistic constructions form a network, and how such a network should be represented. It also tried to build an actual database system of linguistic constructions involving fundamental verbs of English. The resulting system is capable of visualizing complex relationships among verbs and their constructions. Application of those theories and concepts are especially promising in such realms as interface designing and data modeling. I am thus interested in: (a) Theorizing the effective application of cognitive linguistics to software development methodologies; (b) Development of NLP-related software systems (e.g. corpus processing systems, e-learning frameworks, etc.) that implement the resulting theory from (a).
