Research Projects

  • Global Marketing of Automotive Industry in Emerging Coutries
    TOMIYAMA EIKO
In this research, we studied the global marketing of the automobile industry in emerging countries. We analyzed the internationalization and global marketing of automobile recycling companies from the perspective of CSV and identified functions, quality, and prices as elements in building competitive advantage, along with the goal of solving social issues, the formation of rules, and the expansion and replication of ecosystems. We highlighted the importance of the used car distribution and dismantling/recycling process after the car is used (scrapped) and proposed solutions for this. In addition, we investigated the process for company-wide sharing of a management philosophy by exploring the success factors and roots of organizational culture and organizational capabilities among the international joint ventures of auto parts manufacturers., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2017/04 -2020/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Graduate Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies
  • The Design Strategy of Hyundai-Kia Motors: A Historical Research on the Nature and Evolution of Customer Value Creation
    CHOI EUGENE
Hyudai-Kia Motors' capability development in the specific perspective of design management such as exterior and interior styling was the essential focus of this research. This intended to bring in a new insight to our understanding of the significance of design management as a vital strategic resource in global perspective. A historical analysis of this scholarly investigation in the particular case of the South Korean latecomer was conducted, and the result was published as, Eugene Choi (2015) "Hyundai's Dynamics of Styling-Driven Capability Development: A Historical Analysis of the 1970s-1990s, International Journal of Automotive Technology & Management, Vol.15, No.3, pp.292-310. The implication of Choi's work also involved with the theoretical furtherance of Nobeoka's SEDA framework (Science-Engineering-Design-Art), and the next potential of this research would be explored in comparative historical analyses of Japanese-Korean automotive manufacturers' cases in design management., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2015/04 -2018/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Ritsumeikan University
  • Supply chain management and distribution of new cars in emerging market- strategies of Japan and Korean major carmakers
Lee Jaeho; KIM Kichan; KIM Pilsoo
This study examined and compared the trends of SCM(Supply Chain Management) of Japanese and Korean automotive industries, by using framework of “supporting type” and “alliancing type”.Hyundai-Kia motors which is a representative Korean carmaker had chosen the alliancing type just after economic crisis, has been reinforcing modular supplement by capital Keiretsu suppliers. This supporting type of SCM policy is considered to have been suitable for green-field investment in order to develop emerging market. In case of Toyota, which is a representative Japanese carmaker, attempted to penetrate alliancing type into its existing Keiretsu network, while it has been trying to support local suppliers in emerging market in order to increase its rate of procurement on the spot. As a conclusion, while Korean carmakers use SCM patterns separately depending on the strategic significance of components, Japanese carmakers are apt to use SCM patterns separately depending on suppliers’ maturity., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2013/04 -2017/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C)
  • Research of Global Marketing mainly about Korean Sutomobile makers in Emerging Countries
TOMIYAMA EIKO; SHIOJI Hiromi; Choi Eugene K.; Lee JAEHO
Focusing on global marketing by South Korean automobile manufacturing groups - primarily Hyundai Motor Group - in emerging economies, this study compared their design strategies, SCM strategies, marketing strategies, and product development processes with those of Japanese automobile manufacturers, for the most part, and identified the differences between them. This study revealed the modes of entry into emerging markets employed by South Korean companies and Western automobile manufacturers, along with the similarities and differences in their marketing strategies, the Hyundai Motor Group’s product planning and development process, partnerships with global suppliers, and transitions in design management over the years., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2013/04 -2016/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Graduate Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies

The general implication and conclusion of the project are three-fold. 1) Industry has its own time and space. A single universal theoretical framework to explain the dynamics of diverse industries does not exist. However, generalization and theorization are possible, as long as one aims at identification of appropriate combination of a variety of determinants and theoretical frameworks for each industry, by mobilizing an adequate periodization. 2) The “industry” is not a concept based on real entity, but an analytical category defined by the purpose of the analysis. Analysis of competitiveness requires systematic analysis of the nature of a given industry. 3) In many industries, the competitiveness and its key determinants changed at the end of 20th Century. The transformations in the global value chain were often attributable to it. However, even inclusive of such, there are many industries in which long-lasting competitive advantage of a specific region was observed., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2011/04 -2016/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Kyoto University

YONEKURA Seiichiro; SHIMAMOTO Minoru; CHOI Eugine; MIYAZAKI Kunio; HIRAO Takeshi; KAWAI Kazuhisa; HOSHINO Yusuke; SHIMIZU Hiroshi
This research project aims exploring how Japanese firms strategically utilizes external resources and develops new products. Recently, the "Open Innovation" has gathered much attention. It has been indicated that Japanese firms were behind in Open Innovation. This research project has scrutinized the Japanese management systems and explored why Japanese firms were behind. More concretely, it has argued how to organize collaboration projects efficiently and how external resources could be strategically utilized by Japanese firms. Parts of the research results were published in "Open Innovation Management" in 2015., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2011/04 -2016/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A), Hitotsubashi University
  • A Research on the South Korean Automotive Manufacturer's Global Product Development Capability from the Perspective of Design Strategy
CHOI EUGENE; SHIOJI Hiromi; LEE Jaeho
The key aim of this research was to analyse the South Korean automotive manufacturer's capability development in the specific perspective of design management. In considering the obvious tendency in the most past studies of engineering-centred competitiveness of each car producer's manufacturing system, and this research intended to bring in a new insight to the international academic research on the nature, structure, and dynamics of industrial competitiveness in global perspective. More than 2 years were required to collect primary data on the South Korean car makers (April 2012 - March 2014), and then, the first draft of the research result was successfully presented at the GERPISA annual conference in June 2014. This was followed by an academic journal publication, i.e. Eugene Choi (2015) "Hyundai's Dynamics of Styling-Driven Capability Development: A Historical Analysis of the 1970s-1990s, International Journal of Automotive Technology & Management, Vol.15, No.3, pp.292-310., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2012/04 -2015/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Ritsumeikan University
