  • Psychological approach to improving the effectiveness of Earthquake Early Warnings
    Nakayachi Kazuya
This research project investigated why protective actions were not taken by individuals despite receiving Earthquake Early Warnings (EEWs), and explored ways to promote protective actions. Residents were surveyed, and results confirmed that mobile phones were the primary devices through which EEWs were received. The results also revealed that residents viewed their phone screens immediately after receiving the EEWs, hindering their ability to take protective actions instantly. We examined the effects of a drill based on conditional discrimination learning. The results of subsequent experiments did not support our hypothesis that trained participants would pay attention to the correct subject in a shorter reaction time during certain situations compared to untrained individuals., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2020/07 -2022/03, Grant-in-Aid for Challenging Research (Exploratory), Doshisha University
  • Development of rat behavior model of free-rider avoidance
    Hata Toshimichi
In the present study, two rats were placed in a single box, and experiments were conducted under multiple conditions in which not only Rat A but also the other Rat B was fed or not fed depending on the lever pressing response of Rat (A). We found that the number of lever presses by Rat A differed depending on whether the other rat was fed or not, specific to the situation in which the Rat A did not obtain food. These findings indicate that animals' responses differed depending on the number of reinforcers obtained by the other individual, suggesting that rats may respond differently to an unfair reward distribution than to a fair one., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2019/04 -2022/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Doshisha University

In this study, it is hypothesized that the negative emotion would disturb the controlling of eating behavior. This procedure reduced the amount of snack intake after the lunch. The first study was done by Aoyam. In the experiment, participants were asked to input the contents of their lunch into their cell phones to facilitate their memory about the lunch. The second study was done by Hata. Using rats, it was examined the effect of the restriction of high-fat food and the enhancement of the sympathetic adrenal medullary(SAM) axis on the choice of high-fat food. It was shown that the choice of high-fat food increased following enhancement of the SAM axis irrespective of the experience of food restriction. The third study was done by Sato. It was reported that negative emotion disturbed the controlling of body weight reducing., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2009 -2011, Grant-in-Aid for Challenging Exploratory Research, Doshisha University

Subjective evidence of the brain reactions for moxibustion was attempted. Moxibustion treatment was done on rats, and measurements of brain functions based on neurotransmitter secretion by microdialysis; electrophysiological changes including EEG ; and gene expression analyses by DNA microarray, were performed. As all the reaction measured was very weak, high S/N ratio was required. Dopamine secretion, elevated gene expression, the elevation of body temperature, changes of hippocampal θwave in EEG, were shown in the experiments. As these are considered to affect brain functions including emotion, memory, etc, moxibustion may have possible curative effects on chronic diseases., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2008 -2010, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Fujita Health University

  • Effects of maternal stress on brain and emotional/motivational functions in adolescence
NAKAHARA Daiichiro; ISHIDA Yasushi; HATA Toshimichi
Maternal stress during pregnancy may have an adverse effect on brain and behavioral development of the affected offspring. We examined; (1) if maternal stress influences cytogenesis in adolescent brain; (2) how maternal stress alters corticosterone secretion; (3) whether maternal stress affects the ability of acute and chronic cocaine administration to potentiate and depress the rewarding effects of electrical stimulation of the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) using intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS); (4) how maternal stress changes the extinction of the MFB stimulation response. Male offspring of female rats that were prenatally stressed or unstressed was used in the present experiment. Prenatal stress treatment was performed daily from gestational days 13 to 19. The dams were put into a Bolman cage and exposed to bright light for 45 min three times a day. The results showed the following: (1) maternal stress induced a decrease in newborn cells of several brain regions related to emotional/motivational functions; (2) maternal stress caused a prolonged post-stress corticosterone secretion in offspring following restraint stress; (3) maternal stress affected neither the potentiating effects of the rewarding impact of the MFB stimulation induced acutely by exposure to cocaine, nor its depressant effects during the withdrawal periods in repeated drug exposures; (4) maternal stress augmented responding during extinction of ICSS with cocaine treatment in offspring. The findings indicate that maternal stress may reduce cytogenesis and negative-feedback of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, whereas increase resistance to extinction of responding for a reward under cocaine loading in offspring., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, 2005 -2007, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B), Hamamatsu University School of Medicine
