  • Trans-local Study on the Japanese Canadian Returnees and Deportees who Settled in Japan
    Izumi Masumi
Throughout the grant period, I collected interviews and personal historical materials from those who returned from Canada and settled in Japan as the result of the 1946 deportation policy. I supported some museum exhibits and conducted public lectures on the wartime experiences of Japanese immigrants in North America, in order to spread the general knowledge about the Japanese diaspora. I attended a research tour of the former Japanese Canadian community in Southern Alberta and also participated in the pilgrimage of the Tule Lake Segregation Center in the United States. I published a Japanese book of Japanese Canadian history, "Nikkei Kanada-jin no Idou to Undou [The Japanese Canadian Movement]" from Takanashi Publishers in 2020. I also published an article analyzing the Japanese Canadian returnees and deportees in an anthology, The Subject(s) of Human Rights: Crises, Violations, and Asian/American Critique (Temple University Press, 2019)., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), 2017/04 -2020/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Doshisha University

  • Historical Research on Japanese American Internment Camps in Arizona, U.S.A.
    IZUMI Masumi
This research project uncovered historical materials on the Japanese American internment during World War II. The project focused on the camps in Arizona, an understudied state in historical research of internment. The War Relocation Authority records showed that Issei, or first generation Japanese Americans, contributed a great deal to the agricultural production of vegetables and fruits in the Gila River camp. Issei used their agricultural and horticultural skills that they developed during the prewar period in California, and the massive agricultural production greatly improved the camp diet. The analysis of the camp high school yearbooks in Gila River showed that Nisei tried to portray their high school days in the image of a "normal" American high school experience. At the same time, the yearbooks represented the Nisei soldiers vividly, indicating that the yearbooks were created to convey the images of Nisei as "American citizens" to the world outside the camp., Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), 2012/04 -2015/03, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (C), Doshisha University
